Is Brown prestigious?

I know it lacks international prestige, as in, it's NOT even in the top 100 universities or so in the world. But does Brown have a national prestige, or it's only prestigious in some areas?

Are you kidding me? Brown is AWESOME! And no, I don’t go there.

No; Brown is fifth-tier fodder (catchy, ain’t it?). Just the name is unattractive. I’d rather go to DeVry.

Brown is ranked within the top 100 colleges in the world:

[QS Top Universities: Schools](http://www.topuniversities.com/schools/data/school_profile/default/brownuniversity)

I think admissions into Brown is uber impressive. Brown is an uber elite school. It’s ranked outside of the top 15 though :(

Is this thread a joke…

Hahah, monstor334, or maybe ITT Tech.

I sense fad thread.

“Brown is the color of poo.”

. . . yes.

Yes… it would be good enough for me…

Brown is very prestigious where it counts, whether nationally or internationally. The educated elite will know about Brown.

Internationally, it probably does not have the same impact because the school does not have a major Engineering or Medical program and does not have a Business school altogether. Those are the three programs that generally determine a university’s global reputation. I cannot think of a single US university that has managed to build a global reputation without excelling at one of those three professional fields.

@monstor344: Stop bragging. We can’t all go to DeVry, and having you rub it in doesn’t help.

I guess we’ll all have to settle for University of Phoenix… Education Connection was too high of a reach for me.

Brown certainly is prestigious on a national level. After all, it is an ivy  . When it comes to international prestige, you can go to a school with more of a reputation in that regard for your graduate degree. Fortunately, many of those schools are American, and will recognize Brown.

It is a lower tier Ivy along with Cornell but it is still a great school.

Alexander,

How about Princeton? Internationally, Princeton is not noted for engineering, business, and medicine. But it is noted for its science and economics programs.

I would say that the international reputation relies on the strength of a school in science, engineering, business school, and medical school. Social science programs such as economics, psycology, and political science also matter, but matter less.

Princeton’s Engineering program is ranked among the top 10-15in the US. But yes, Princeton is a bit of an exception.

I will say that in my part of the country (Deep South), Brown would have less name recognition than any other Ivy. And it probably has the lowest endowment of any Ivy. But prestige? Absolutely. And awesome? Definitely.

These threads are easy to stop from turning into flame wars. Determine what the OP wants to hear, tell them, then exit because the conversation will not be useful.

In this case:

RML, Brown may be prestigious amongst rich people in the Northeast, but nationwide, and especially internationally, it’s not as prestigious Berkeley.

See, now we don’t have to talk for 10 pages and say nothing.
