Is Bucknell really this quiet...?

What’s a “Tory Burch Bag”? I’m from the North Shore of Long Island and my D carries the same no-name tote she’s had since 9th grade. It seems my D has befriended alot of girls with a low budget and they dress nice but very practical. What we liked about Bucknell the first time we saw it was that the kids dressed nice, casual and were groomed. Some other campuses, the kids all wore sloppy sweat pants and shirts, greasy hair pulled back in ponytails and could care less about their appearance. I guess, I liked Bucknell that the kids have pride in how they appear but never find them to be superficial or into designer stuff. I don’t think it’s stuck up at all but more down to Earth and practical kids who probably take pride in who they are in a good way. Just our observation. I think the kids show respect that way. If I was a professor, I don’t think I’d take a kid seriously who showed up to my class in pajamas!

When my son was a senior in high school he read and posted on College Confidential a few times. Now that he is a student at Bucknell he is way too busy to go on College Confidential. He is happy at Bucknell and would not frequent a message board that deals with choosing a college. The lack of activity on the board here is not because Bucknell is not a lively place. While you would probably find students on Facebook I dont think they hang out here too much. My son is very stimulated by his classes this semester, and so involved in them and his friends that he would not think to visit College Confidential.

If you look at the number of posts for Bucknell, it is much larger than most of the other schools. Only the very elite (Ivy, etc.) have very active boards. CC seems to be filled w/ the very elite. Obviously we, or our children, can not all get into Harvard or Stanford. Too bad more of the less elite (Bucknell is still among the elite, so I should really not complain) do not blog.

BucknellBubbly, I see you said you sing at Mass. Is there an active Catholic community on campus? Are Masses offered on campus each week, or does one have to go to a parish church in town?

Thanks for the input!

Catholic Campus Ministry is the largest religious organization on campus as far as I know, and there are lots of ways to get involved. There are 3 Masses on campus each weekend (4:30pm Saturday and 4pm and 10pm on Sunday), as well as Sunday morning masses at Sacred Heart Parish a few blocks off campus. We also have daily mass 4 days a week, and masses for Holy Days of Obligation, Ash Wednesday, etc.

Thanks so much for replying! Does the Catholic group do social/fellowship events, too, or is it strictly for arranging liturgies?

Nope, there’s a lot of different opportunities. The Newman House (home to Catholic Campus Ministry, aka CCM, and the campus priest) hosts dinner each Thursday night (the Protestant and Jewish houses also host weekly dinners, and all of these are open to the entire campus regardless of faith tradition). That’s great because we get a home-cooked meal, you don’t have to pay to eat in the caf or bison, and you get to see your friends!

We also have a variety of retreats, as well as things like a Super Bowl party each year and trips to the Freez (local ice cream wonderfulness), etc. We do a lot with first year mentoring so that the first-year students can meet each other and the older students and ease their way into CCM and Bucknell in general.

Thanks, BucknellBubbly, for the info on the Catholic ministry. It’s great to hear that it is so active. I know my son would want to get very involved.

One more question, if you don’t mind (two, actually)–are there a significant number of students from the West Coast? How do students from far away get to Bucknell? Harrisburg seems to be the closest airport.

There are quite a few students from the west coast, it’s my understanding the admissions office spends a lot of time out there so I know a lot of students from California, Washington state, and Oregon. I don’t know the exact statistics but I’m sure you could find them on the website.

Williamsport’s airport is about a half hour away while Harrisburg’s is about an hour I believe, although I don’t fly home. Bucknell does shuttle buses for the breaks, there may be a small fee but I am not sure about that. Other students will just hitch rides with friends headed in that direction.

I know quite a few West Coast kids. Bucknell does have shuttle buses to the larger airports for the end of the semester-usually Kennedy Airport in NYC because there are more flights out of there then say Harrisburg or Williamsport–(which will usually connect to Philly for longer commercial flights.)
While this is a courtesy (there’s a shuttle fee) for those students who have to make international flight plans, it works for those kids flying to the west coast, too.
However, I remember when my parents were talking with some parents of Seattle students and San Francisco area parents–those parents told them their kids liked flying out of Philly just as well–and Bucknell does have more shuttle buses to the Philadelphia Airport–for all breaks; October; Thanksgiving; December; mid January; March Spring Break; and end of school, May. You can begin to make reservations in the fall once you’re on campus.

bucknell had enrolled an average of 57 students from those three states over the last four years.

Hey I have a question: how many 5 year (BA+BS) applicants does Bucknell accept every year? Thanks!

BucknellBubbly, aberdeen, and ericatbucknell, thank you so much for your replies! Shuttle buses make the travel issue much less worrisome.

You’re all doing a great job promoting Bucknell. :)

here is a link to the shuttle information if you want to look at it some more:
