I'm currently a junior in high school. I am starting to think about college majors so I can tailor my high school schedule to prepare me for my college major. I am interested in business because math is my strongest subject and my dad is a financial consultant and he tells me what his job is like, and it seems relatively interesting to me. Some people tell me that business is often somewhat worthless to major in. I'm starting to wonder the same thing. Would it be worth it to major in business, possibly with a concentration in finance, if I get into my top 4 schools (at the moment) which are Penn, UVA, Michigan, and Emory? Assume that I would be attending the business school at each of these schools. Would it be worth it to major in business if I don't get into one of these 4 schools? Thanks.

“Some people tell me that business is often somewhat worthless to major in.”

response:

“But at least I have a job, dick” :D

haha, I like the way you think

It’s worth it if you make it worth it.

I’m a senior in high school planning to major in business (probably finance). I took a lot of factors into consideration when deciding what route to go and after a ton of research I came to the conclusion that you can do pretty much anything you want with a business degree. I’m planning on either developing my own business, becoming a corporate lawyer, or working as a go-between for a private corporation and the US government. I’m not too worried about figuring out what I definitely want to do now because I know that with a business degree (and a minor in economics and/or polysci) I should be set.

I am actually wondering about the same thing.

Business is I think the top major that everyone goes into? (correct me if I’m wrong)

so I don’t know if it is overrated…

It is a popular major, but if you are going to complain about it then I suggest majoring in something else. Going to a top college would put you in a little more advantage, but that doesn’t mean a 2nd tier or 3rd tier college would be useless. You would just have to put in more work. So to answer you question, it’s worth it only if you put in the effort to do so.

I suppose it’s the same way with any major. It’s worth it if you make it worth it. I’m just a bit worried that business schools are too pre professional and don’t give you the whole “college experience”. If I somehow get into Wharton, I would be required to take 1/3 (I think) of my classes outside of Wharton which I guess would give me a more broadened education.

Find out what you want to do as a career and do everything you can to nail a job down. At the end of the day, that is all that matters. Whats the point of going to college, working hard, getting good grades, but having no job?

The the question everyone (that was older) always asked me was “Oh you are going to 'SC? Have you thought about where you are going to work after you graduate?” And I had the response “Yes, I have a full time job offer already.”

People were more impressed by that than where I went or what major I was.
