Is CALS hard to get into (relatively speaking)

I know I should just wait a couple of weeks, but is CALS really that hard to get into? From the official decisions thread it looks like all of those people had really, really good stats, the kind I expected for engineering. Is CALS really one of the tougher ones, or are those people probably just the exception? I was under the impression that it's one of the easier ones, is that true?

Depends on the major you apply to within CALS....AEM is difficult to get into and others aren't as bad

You're compared to people within the major you apply to, so i'd wager that it depends a lot on the major you want and how qualified you are for it. Eg, i applied to the entomology major with decent credentials, and they get very few ento applicants each year. I prob had it a lot easier than other people.

yeah, the developmental sociology major at Cornell is really small so it's less competitive than say AEM. But that doesn't mean an 80 average will sneak it's way in. It's STILL hella competitive, just not as competitive as the rest. Biometry is another easier one. If you apply to say Biology and Society, or Biological Sciences it's near impossible. You'll be compared with students with AP Bio, Chem, and some with AP Physics as well. Good luck to all!

lol I applied to biometry and statistics...way to bash my major haha. Now when I get rejected I'll be like, "wow...I got rejected from the easiest major to apply to...I'm a complete jackass" lol.

Man I really hope I get in. If it weren't for my stupid test scores (ACT is only 30) I would be feeling much more confident.

EDIT: If I haven't gotten a likely letter by now, my friend says I'm out, because biometry has few applicants, so if I was in I would have heard by now :(. I guess there's no chance of me going to Cornell next year. Have fun without me guys.

The average for AEM is a 29...why is this?

prospective i-bankers aren't exactly scholars...

Wow, nvm...

Seems silly low, I saw they had 14% acceptance rate.

Here's a link to Cornell AEM student profile- acceptance rate 14.6%
Applied Economics and Management/Cornell

Would you say the Biology and Society major is that competitive as well?

oh no. my s applied to AEM..is it really that hard to get in? we are so stressed with the waiting. s is very well rounded. question, is it better to have say 700,700,700 or 800, 600, 700 or ? meaning does getting about the same in all three areas make a better impression or does having that one 800 grab attention. i keep reading about kids that get in and two of the three scores seem low but they have that one 800. and am i wrong but lots of accepted seem to have scores that are lower than i expected. guess cu really does look at the whole pic. another question: if AEM does not take you and sends it over to arts and sciences, would that be better or worse for getting into. sooo worried.

bio and society is getting more competitive as more students are learning about the major and applying to it.....

I was surprised they wanted me...even as a transfer

Would Atmospheric Science (Meteorology) be one of those EASIER departments to get admission to at CALS?

um, that's what I applied to and I was deferred. I hope I get in RD.

What about science of natural and environmental systems?

The lower ACT or SAT scores for AEM is that they put many of the athletes into it or athletes choose AEM. Not saying athletes are dumb because many of them acheive 4.0s.

Reason for lower SAT scores for AEM (i emailed them a while back, and this is the response i recieved):

“There was a decision in the admission process to place weight on leadership/extra curricular... The "well rounded" student as opposed to just the "academic"... a student who possesses qualities of a business leader.”

Just looking for a link that confirms that ACT 29. From looking at the admittance rate and the stats posted here at cc for admitted students to AEM a 29 seems awfully low. I've heard athletes being placed in Cals, not AEM specifically. I haven't been able to find any breakout of the SAT or ACT for any particular school or in the case of AEM, a major. Any help greatly appreciated.

The acceptance rate of 14% is real. So, is the lowish avg. SAT score of AEM. There are a ton of athletes in AEM, Hotel, and Sociology. Most of the non-athletes in AEM probably have SAT scores on par with CAS if not higher.
