I was just wondering if the general public sees Carnegie Mellon basically as one of the top universities, right below the Ivy leagues. Also, please chance me if you have the time x]

EC's -
Varsity Tennis 4 years team captain
National Honor Society - on executive board
computer club - president
Editor in chief for the school newspaper
Founder of a tutoring organization in which students from middle/elementary school students sign up via the webs website i designed and then I pair the kids up with a NHS tutor to be tutored at a local library- so far we've had over 20 students and 20 tutors, about 60 hours of community service delivered!

CMU is comparable to the ivy league in science and technology. Since I live in Pittsburgh everyone knows about CMU but I can not speak for other cities and states.

well two bad pieces of information - first - i’m asian, which i believe makes it harder for me
and second - i was hoping to apply to the engineering school or something electrical/computer engineering or comp sci related… unfortunately i know that CMU has one of the best comp sci courses in the nation. >.<

Although we did not attend Sleeping Bag Weekend (see other posts) for the purpose of improving admissions odds, I heard some comments that make me think that maybe does help to show interest by visiting.

For SCS, your app is a very strong match-- neither safety nor reach. However, I would recommend getting in touch with the tennis coach on campus - with four years as varsity captain, you must be pretty good. One of my best friends is on the guys’ tennis team, and he claims they’re looking for recruits. That could be an easy ticket in. :)

RicePicker… I’m asian too. I don’t think it necessarily makes it harder for you to get in. I got accepted ED1. Regardless of your grades, if your essays are top notch, you’ll probably get in

i mean i’ve been captain of the tennis team junior and senior year, not every year (i didn’t mean to mean that lol) like i’m decent at tennis, not like amazing.

Oh, whoops! My bad. In that case CMU’s probably an exact match school for you. As for being Asian hurting your admissions chances-- in SCS, it may. If you were applying to Design or Drama it might be different, but SCS/CIT/MCS are flooded with male Asian, Indian and Caucasian students.

Of course, hundreds of Asian students still get in – it’s not like they bar you from attendance for your race. But if there’s a female, black, Hispanic or native American applicant with the same statistics as an Asian student, he/she will have priority over the Asian student in almost every occasion. It sucks, but it’s true.

thanks for your time and effort kate. would increasing my SAT I to 2300 help significantly with my chances? Also, i plan to take the SAT II math, physics, and spanish tests. hopefully these will help my chances ^_^

Your SAT scores are already at the 75th percentile for CMU. If you want to go for higher that’s fine, but don’t do it at the expense of your grades. By the way, CMU wants ALL your test scores but they also superscore, taking the highest section scores from every sitting.
Good luck!

Rice, have you tried the ACT, DS couldn’t break 2100 on the SAT, but scored 35 on ACT. Was able to get into SCS a couple of years ago and later decided to double major in ECE. Also Asian.

It would be good to take those tests, but don’t worry too much. As AVHS dad pointed out, your scores are already pretty high and you’re in a good place there. My advice to you would be to make your essays as colorful and bright as possible, and to do something fun or creative this summer so that your application “stands out” a bit more. All of your extracurriculars are very standard with the exception of the web development you did.

My two cents: Get a job for a florist. Teach an origami camp for kids. Go rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, camping, canoodling, lifeguarding, psychoanalyzing, laser-tagging, chess-playing, Pokemon collecting, or fly fishing. Pick up a hobby you’ve never tried before. Work at an amusement park. Anything that might give you a new life experience will also make you more appealing to a school like CIT or SCS within CMU.
