Is cheerleading a recruited sport?

Hi!

I am helping a varsity cheerleader with her applications. If it is NOT a recruited sport, how does one "try-out" and when does that process occur?

Rodney~It depends on the skill level of the Cheerleader and their position (base/flyer).

I know SEVERAL Cheerleaders that have been and are currently being recruited for both College Cheer (competition-Kentucky, Hawaii, Alabama, etc) as well as for Acro Teams (U of Oregon, Baylor, APU, etc).

My suggestion would be to put together a video of the Cheerleader showing off all their skills. Then send along with a resume to the Coaches of the schools they are looking at. (My daughter is currently a Soph on a Varsity Coed Team and this is the advice that her Coach gave to her.)

When the Cheerleader sends her info to the Coach, make sure she askes about their “try-out” process and if they have open spots on the squad. Again, this will depend on the caliber of the team. A team like Kentucky, Alabama, etc may not take “walk on’s” or have “try-outs”.

Hope this helps and good luck!
