is CHEM 43L much harder than chem 31L ?

Chemistry 43L is a honors chemistry, is it much harder than chem 31L ?
I got 5 on AP chem and 800 on SATII Chem, do I need to start with Chem 31L
or Chem 43L ?

thanks a lot

It’s hard to tell since I don’t think they’ve actually had the class at Duke yet or maybe just 1 semester (I’m not too sure) so I imagine many people just don’t know since they are either long past that stage or just getting to it.

Speaking from experience about chem 21 and 23, I’d say that those two courses are significantly different in their content, expectations, and target students. The honors course is designed for those who need a refresher or a gen chem course that covers the essentials well but at a rapid pace. The other course is designed for those who might not have such a great goundation in chemistry or none at all and would like to learn everything thoroughly and at a more moderate pace.

Which one you choose depends a lot on your goals, schedule, and future plans. You need to consider why you are taking gen chem and how much time you are willing to spend on classes like this.

SBR,

very helpful, thanks

As SBR stated; those are new courses (so no one really knows, at least I don’t know anything who took 31/43 as second semester chem last semester. I think people sitll still took 21/22/23 second semester last year.)

21 is a decent legit chemistry class
22 is a joke (stupidly easy, if you are good at chem, don’t even need to read the textbook)
23 is not really chemistry (excruciatingly painful because of the teacher, Tonne)

Cross check the teachers to make sure the new courses are not just retooled old chem classes with bigger and more impressive class numberings (read somewhere last year that Duke’s course numbers are too low, causing graduate programs to underestimate the difficulty of the courses) (sp)

noobcake,

probably, i should take chem 31L. The problem is there are too
many students have registered in 31L (450+) and fewer in 41L (only 150+).

thanks
