So today, someone told me that to take Organic Chem, I had to first take General Chem 1 and 2. I think this isn't the case. Am I right?

OP, it depends on the school. Check your catalog for your school’s prerequisites.

It will depend upon the chem dept’s policies at your college. Check the course catalog for your school to see if OChem has pre-reqs

Some schools will require Gen 1 & 2 first; some won’t.

I know one school that is 2 hours away from the vicinity of my uni and it has this odd system of allowing organic before general. Most students that I know of from that school usually come out knowing very little of the concept behind the material, and the student who has taken general chemistry will become quite frustrated when the class doesn’t even focus much on important concepts such as oxidation-reduction because half the students haven’t even covered that topic due to their lack of general chem knowledge. I’m sure that everyone goes back to review on materials that they have forgotten over the years when preparing for MCAT, but I think the confused student in Organic will certainly have to do much more than flip a few pages to regain lost knowledge of the subject. It’s much better to take general first before coming back to it after taking organic and realizing just how much you needed it beforehand.
