Is Chemistry Honors enough knowledge for AP Chemistry Test?

Hey guys, had another question on AP tests.

I am taking Chemistry Honors this year, using the Modern Chemistry 1st edition textbook. I have heard from some students previous chemistry students that what I learn from Chem honors covers most of the AP Chemistry AP test, and would only have to go over a few things to be 100% ready for it. I am interested in taking the AP Chemistry AP test this year after hearing this, but not sure if it is true. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Did you learn about Kinetics, Equilibrium (acid bases, solubility), and Electrochemistry? These are subjects on the AP exam that may not be taught in some Honors classes. If you want to take the AP exam, pick up a PR review book and see if you understand everything in it.

Electrochemistry was something we very briefly went over, but everything else you mentioned I recognize. Thanks a lot for the tip!

Depends on what your school teaches in honors. The review book will be a good guide. You may also want to consider the SAT II subject test if you’re trying to demonstrate achievement to a college. (No college placement for that.)

Is your Honors class designed for students to take the AP exam? When I took Chem Honors last year, we only went over Period Trends, limited-reactant Stoichiometry, Solution Stoichiometry, the basics of acids and bases, and basic organic chemistry and biochemistry. Taking AP Chemistry, I was introduced to more complicated problems to the topics described above. We also covered Gas Laws, Molecular Geometry, Hybridization, properties and types of Solids and Liquids, properties of Solutions, Kinetics, Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, Thermodynamics, and soon Electrochemistry.

There is a lot to know, so be careful about how in-depth your Honors class is in comparison to the AP Chemistry curriculum! :open_mouth:

Great, thanks for all the tips guys! Will make sure to compare the curriculum for both classes at my school.

My teacher said that AP Chemistry is 12 times of what is in Chemistry honors, lol. But yeah sure. Since it’s a prerequisite, I am sure it will help you. Also if you feel as if you have completely and perfectly understood the content in Chemistry Honors, I’m sure it will be of great help for AP Chemistry.
