Is Chicago Numero Uno?

Yep, I am definitely loving the U of Chicago. Zach on the Uncommon Blog commented on how it was like walking through the "American Hogwarts". It's a great metaphor, even though he doesn't think so.

But does the FUN really come to DIE? I like to have fun at times...my only fear is that I will be surrounded by mundane nerds who grow pimples overnight from studying for finals. My life has an academic focus, but I also hope that college will be enjoyable in other respects.

Check out my "Chicago FAQ" thread for my take on that one.

"Mundane nerds" doesn't really describe us. And unless you take an unusually demanding schedule (which you'll know you're doing), you will have time to do other things than work. Exactly how much time? It depends on who you are, how thorough you like to be about homework, what major you're in , and your other commitments.

WOOT! Got in!

congrats ,

I would take Chicago over Brown. Same education; better location.

Brown was my son's first choice for awhile junior year. He is a freshman now at UChi and having a great time.

@ Bohbeep: I don't think you really have anything to worry about. It's still college, after all: all schools have intellectualism and more traditional college fun; what's unique about Chicago is that it balances it contrary to the way other schools may. Still both existent, I'm sure. Also, people have fun in intellectual ways: rather than go binge drinking to have fun, you might discuss a cool topic or go watch a play or something not quite as popular at other schools. If you want to drink, it's college, it will be available, but I'm willing to bet people have a little more restraint here.

to anybody that has gotten in what was your academic and ec profile like?

sorry, dont have much time but i had a 2250 on my SATs
3 subject tests - math 1 730, chem 750, us history 750
ranked 2 in class of about 200
a couple 5's on APs
play guitar
captain of 2 varsity sports
school newspaper
started a debate club in my school
got in EA

No, actually. The U of C was and still probably is a dark horse on my list. I just wish its reputation wasn't so understated.

If you are so worried about attending the U of Chicago because of "its understated reputation", then the school probably is not a good fit for you. Most of the students that I have met at Chicago really couldn't care less about the common man's perception of Chicago's reputation and are at the school because it was where they wanted to go and its met their desires and needs for a top quality education, etc.

Word.

hahaha.

i just had an U OF Chicago interview and the lady just discouraged me to go there! she basically said that students have bad college experiences at u of chicago based on a survey...well now i don't know anymore if i want to go.. why is she interviewing for that school if she is saying bad things about it?? it's weird!

I wasn't even looking at it initially because it lacks the major program I'm after, but a friend who got in last year encouraged me to check it out, so while I was in Chicago looking at some other schools this summer, we spent a day at UofC, and I fell in love. It's tied for first now. It has the environment, the other school has the program.
I want to throw them into a particle accelerator and mash them together. And add some financial aid. o.o

LaVie: That's really strange. When I was at another school, we spent some time with my mom's friend from high school who was a professor at that school, and he spent a lot of time dissing it, but that was in an informal setting, not when he was supposed to be selling the school, as interviewers often are. So that's really odd.
