Is Chicago really a geek school?

My college guidebook names UChicago as the nation's 'nerd' school..
And the 3 people I know that go there are rather 'nerdy'..

Now.. how true is this "myth"?

I think it's quite true. Of course it's a broad generalization, and you're sure to find one or two kids out there who don't live on computers and do have some athletic skill...But for the most part, it's accurate.

I don't think we have any current Chicago students or alumni among us to verify. :(

To a degree, it's a myth. I mean, Chicago probably has its fare share of overly hard working geeks but if you're the kind of person who wants to relax and have a good time every so often, you're definitely going to find others who are into that.

From what I've gathered about the school from my interview and stuff I've read, Chicago is one of those schools where the students have the ability to balance their time and lives well between recreation and work.

The kids take their studies seriously but they don't take themselves seriously.

From what I've heard and seen, it's one of the most nerdy schools out there

I talked to the representative from Chicago and its definitely true. "The fun dies here" is the unofficial motto...

o lordy......
how do people survive there?

Yeah, I've heard that the University of Chicago is pretty rigorous.

ok, first of all i know this is such an old thread but whatever, i just found it and i want to respond:

i prospied at uchicago and it was AMAZING. im really hard to please too- i find the upenn/dartmouth/cornell frats really lame. but we went to 2 frat parties (yea, chicago has frats...) and an apartment party. oh, and we pre-gamed and post-gamed with the chillest kids. so nah, chicagos not just for nerds.

how much drinking at chicago? i dont drink but i dont like sitting around and being super nerdy. is there a happy medium between geek and greek at chicago?

" you're sure to find one or two kids out there who don't live on computers and do have some athletic skill...But for the most part, it's accurate."

also, it cant be THAT bad. according to the chicago website 52% of the class of 2008 did at least one varsity sport.

maybe they count chess and mtg as varsity sports?

from what i saw, id say that yeah, drinkings a huge part of any college social life BUT at chicago they werent obsessed with the fact that they were drinking. meaning that they drink to have a better night out--- they dont go out to get wasted.

I have a friend at U of C that says most of the people she meets are either people who party every night, or who study every night.

Kosuke, I think I'm in your position (probably a lot of us here). We enjoy working and studying, but we also like to have a good time. I think U of C can do that because there's so much to do down there.

i actually attended a party at an apartment in chicago too (hey lola! nice to meet you today : ) ) and I also don't drink...let me tell you, it really wasn't an issue at all, which was refreshing. Some people drank and others didn't, and no one noticed or cared. also, i sort of responded to this perpetual query about chicago in the chicago vs. yale thread...feel free to im me if you want more info as i've visited twice and have a bunch of friends out there right now who have made it quite clear--you can have fun there.

I was rather apprehensive about the Chicago atmosphere since I heard rumors that UofC is "where fun comes to die" and how "hell does freeze over." If you're into parties there's almost always a frat party on weekends, and there'll definitely be a lot of people there. I've only been to about 4-5 frat parties so far, but they've all been crowded and lots of fun! Also, downtown Chicago is only 20 minutes away by public transportation! I was actually pretty surprised with how social the people in my house are. Lots of people just talk or watch tv or watch movies or play games like texas hold 'em in the lounge and just hang out in the hallway talking. If we get bored enough we'll go downstairs to play ping pong or arcade games in our downstairs lounge at like 3am. Whenever I walk around I always find people's doors open. Although there are those students who stay in their room for most of the day, when you're out having fun with other people it won't matter. Everyone has a study break every once in awhile. I've already been downtown many times, tried many different restaurants, went to a Chicago Bulls vs. LA Lakers game, shopped at State St/Michigan Ave., and went to second city (a comedy club) with my house. I personally like it because the school isn't a total party school, but you can definitely party once in awhile and not feel pressured to go out and do things all the time.
