oh well i'm just wondering...
if anybody could answer it would be much appreciated...
thx people.=)

if your question is about affirmative action, then no

Yes, chinese people are minorities. Colleges chose to discriminate towards them, but AA policies don't apply to them. You should know that!

I believe the term they like to use is 'under represented minorities' - and when it comes to chinese college applicants that would make the answer a no. But so many people of different races run into this. We have a friend whose daughter - very smart - white - was accepted to a couple of ivies but not to the school her Dad went to. When he asked how that could be thay said they had filled their quota of caucasian females but that if she had even a teeny drop of American Indian blood they could fit her in that way. So that could be called discrimination against white people. She survived - went to another school and was perfectly happy. Is now a successful young adult.

Did they really say that? Really really? Because that sounds like they'd be setting themselves up for a big fat lawsuit, as the SCOTUS ruled quite firmly that quotas are a big fat no-no.

I mean, really really?

If you're referring to minority status for college admissions, then it depends on the college. Most of the elite colleges get plenty of Chinese applicants, so it would not be considered URM status. On the other hand, a college like Earlham or Furman would consider Chinese applicants to be URMs.

Yes they really said that. But it was several years ago so maybe was before the ruling. Kind of a dumb move anyway as the Daddy has money and no more of it went to his old school - he was ticked. Seems to me the Quotas still exist - they just don't call them that anymore!

Minorities in America, then yes.
Minorities in College Apps? Not a chance.

what about other types of Asians.. Filipino, Vietnamese, Laos..

Asians aren't minorities for AA in college admission at all. If anything, there is prejudice against them

You realize I'm referring to UC vs. Bakke, right? That ruling was in 1978. Unless the person in question was denied admission before 1978, that's a very easily challenged reason for denying admissions.

The court even later affirmed this in 2003 with Grutter v. Bollinger and Gratz v. Bollinger

I don't not believe you, but it sounds quite improbable to me that any admissions people would be stupid enough to say that openly when several SCOTUS cases have stated that quotas are illegal.

Gryffon5147 and TheMK99 have on their elite school blinders. As I mentioned before, plenty of good schools would welcome Asians of all sorts as URMs.

I don't believe that story even if you heard it from the Dad. He may have made up something as a reason for his D's lack of acceptance.

Also, if he really does have a lot of money, his D should have gotten in under being a legacy and the offspring of a large potential donor. Maybe his D was rejected because she sabotaged her application because she didn't want to go there.

at small new england LACs, any asian ethnicity could be sen as an URM
