Likewise, if a girl knowingly lets a door slam in someone’s face, she’s probably a *****. There’s no reason to apply this standard to only one gender.

@DolorousEdd:

Fair enough, but likewise, there is no reason to make an exception towards one gender. If everyone would be polite, that would be fantastic. But “Chivalry is dead” is a lame excuse, for anyone, to essentially just be rude.

Done debating, carry on other CC’ers! :)

I haven’t argued that men should be rude to women; merely that all people should be nice to others.

As for chivalry… Well, where’s my knighthood, estate, and peasants?

“I haven’t argued that men should be rude to women; merely that all people should be nice to others.”

Ok, well I can agree with that! :)

I don’t think chivalry ever really existed, so no, it’s not dead.

@DolorousEdd: Don’t forget the Rocinante. :P

As a social pattern, it existed. That’s like saying the Roman Empire never existed, because it was merely an imaginary entity assigned to a bunch of peoples sitting on some land, who had sat on that land before the “Roman Empire” and would continue to sit on that land after the “Roman Empire.”

I need a steed!

I think chivalry has been somewhat romanticized from how it really was. Basically they treated women like 20 year old infants who weren’t capable of doing anything. THey had to stay in the house, and couldn’t choose who they married.

Does that sound nice to you?

^That’s what I’m talking about. That’s what “chivalry” was/sometimes still is considered to be and it really isn’t “chivalrous” to treat women like children who cannot decide anything for themselves. People act like chivalry is something that was sooooo great and romantic and crap…when that’s not really what it was. We have completely unrealistic expectations of everything and it seems like people tend to romanticize the past and make it seem like it was far greater than it actually was. I cringe when people say “we should go back to the chivalrous ways of the <1950s!!!” Um…I’d rather not go back in the past, times were certainly not better.

I hold doors open and do nice things like that for people for reasons not based on their gender

Yeah, I think you should just hold doors open for people regardless of their gender. If I see someone who is carrying a lot of things and needs help, I’ll open the door for them…I feel like it’s rude not to if you’re right there. If I got to the door first, I’ll usually hold the door open for the person who is there right after me. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed men in particular not being polite and such…it seems like that’s just humans in general being rude

I’ve never believed in chivalry, but I definitely believe in treating everyone the same, whether or not they’re a man or woman.

To answer the OP question, uhh… I think it carries a different meaning than from Victorian England and the like. It’s not dead, per se, but it changes with the social structure of everyday people.

i don’t even know what chivalry is :(. it just makes me think of some knight in a castle or a guy being old-fashion-y nice. i saw someone say that on tumblr once and some guy was like, “there are nice guys out there.” haha. actually my coworker said that women want equal rights yet they want to be treated out to lunch, have doors opened, be spoiled, etc.

If people want to bring it back, we might as well go back to the 50s. And have men support the home and women become housewives.

I vote for the Feudalist Party every November

I considered it, but I’m really a Bonapartist at heart.

I always open doors for people if I can, regardless of who they are. It’s just a nice thing to do.

mathsciencedude: Chivalry is dead
Chivalry: Mathsciencedude is dead
Nietzsche: Your both idiots
God: Nietzsche is dead …

…and he has terrible grammar

Chivalry isn’t dead. At school in New Mexico, I literally have NEVER opened a door because some guy has to run ahead of me and open it. However, I’m thinking the 6:1 guy to girl ratio at the school has something to do with it…

I hold the door for both sexes, because bi-sexual…

wait wut?
