Is class average taken into account?

Looking at my printed transcript, the averages for the classes I was in were frightfully low. This is because my university has strict grading policies and only permits a certain average class GPA regardless of individual performance (2 of these classes were on a strict bell curve). I still managed to do okay:

Microeconomics: A+ (class average 2.6/4, size 390
Honors Calc: A (class average 3.0/4), size 37
Honors Linear Algebra B (class average 2.7/4), size 41
Newtonian Mechanics A- (class average 2.6/4), size 216

My other question is this: many US universities have high grade inflation, with averages exceeding 3.3/4. Will my grades look better given the university's grading policies? It's not like students are dumb--the ones in my honors math classes had straight A's in math in high school.

Unlike UG admissions where your HS profile describing the grading system, no such description accompanies your college transcript and College Report.

However, the CR does include questions about: scale of grading, the school’s passing mark, and highest gpa in the class. Your gpa will be considered within this context.

This is often cited for some of the highly selective colleges, making it sound like it’s easier to get higher grades in these institutions. What these numbers don’t reflect is the academic level of the cohort of these colleges. I can give a personal example. As a fr, D1 attended a top public where she was one of about 20 students to get their biggest scholarship out of 6k fr. In soph year she transferred to one of these ‘grade inflated’ privates. She was premed and her big lament was not taking more of the premed coursework in as a fr in her previous school. While the ‘grading’ might have been more liberal, her ‘competition’ for those grades was much tougher. She went from a school where she was in the upper 1-5% academically to one where she was more in the middle 50%.

Entomom, I am holding my university transcript in my hand and I can assure you that all of the class averages are reported.

Many of the people here who had A averages in HS are now getting B-'s and C’s (my province also ranked second on PISA). I am Canadian by the way, so that may be why it is different.

Also, it is not only the top colleges that have high grades (I don’t really consider that inflation because the students there are very bright), take a look at this:

Penn State: 3.1
Ohio State: 3.04
Southern Utah: 3.24
… and the list goes on

Mine is 2.6. I am wondering if that will be taken into consideration, because IMO it should be. I don’t attend a bad university either; it is in the top 3-5 in Canada.

Call the schools and ask them.
