Is CLEP wise ?

I am trying to graduate on time in 4 years instead of 5 years but there is 1 problem. I found out by the time I get to calculus 2 that it would be probably fall 2017  I want you transfer and graduate on time. The only way I can transfer and maybe graduate is if I CLEP out of either college algebra or pre-cal. Which one is easier to CLEP out of ? I feel algebra I would have to rush but is easier than pre-cal but pre-cal gives me time to study and probably CLEP out of. The prerequisites are really affecting me. I intend to major in computer engineering and I want to graduate my class. I talked to a counselor at school and they said I should focus more on my GPA than on graduating on time and how it’s better to take prerequisites so that I learn the material and stuff. I really want to graduate 2018 not 2019. Unless I graduate summer 2018 which I don’t know if a lot of college do that. I want to graduate at 22 not 23  this is really hurting me. What do I do ?

Maybe start by locating a CLEP Official Study Guide book (many libraries have an edition on the shelf) and look over the practice tests for the two subject titles you mentioned. This will give you an idea of how much you already know and if it would be doable for you.

You have already checked that your school would grant you credit for passing these particular CLEP exams, right? Not all schools do. And some allow the departments to decide whether they will grant credit for a passing score (plus you need to know what they consider a passing score as this is decided by your school, not CLEP).

Here’s everything I’ve been able to dig up on it:

Also, if you go to the search section of the College Board site it says which schools accept which ones in the applying to tab. I’m really loving the college board site. My official practice guide arrived in the mail this afternoon and I’m loving the practice exams so far and I’m sincerely hoping the real exams are that easy. I started looking at core curriculum requirements and I’m not liking how many high school subjects they appear to want me to retake in college and I’m starting to regret all those honors courses I took isntead of AP :frowning:

I’m not 100% on how it works but I’ve already scheduled the US History I exam and if I’m wrong then I guess I’m out $80, but I figure I won’t know until I actually start meeting with advisors whether or not it works like the website says it does. My high school guidance counselor actually sent me here when I asked! They have no idea how it works!

^^I really hope you have checked to see if any/all of the colleges you plan to apply to grant credit for the CLEP exams. Typically, those who plan to attend traditional colleges will wait to take CLEP exams once they have made the decision on which college they will attend. Some colleges do not recognize the CLEP exams, some will grant credit for the exams but may require a much higher score or be very selective in which exams they will recognize. Lots to check on!

I would add to @BuckeyeatHeart said about checking whether colleges accept CLEP credits. Even many of the ones that do will not take CLEP credit for the math classes. And if you are planning to go onto engineering, I do not think it is wise to CLEP out of them anyway. What math are you taking now? Is it possible to some math courses in the summer? Are you at a community college now? Engineering is a rigorous program and calculus is just the start.
