Hi. Which college has worse grade deflation- cornell or carnegie mellon?
That is, which college tends to give out A's more easily assuming you do a decent amount of work?
Whats the average gpa at both schools?

I am not sure about which school tends to give out A's more easily.
I know that my son was accepted to both schools, but a few of his friends were accepted to Cornell but got wait listed at CMU.

^ What do you mean by that?

like where would it be easier to earn an a in a class on average?

how are we possibly going to know about grade deflation at cmu?

"Worse grade deflation" is more confusing than it needs to be, as you are just asking which school has more grade inflation. To that I do not know the answer, but whatever values you find, keep in mind that both Cornell and Carnegie Mellon students tend to work really hard.

Look at the average GPA of a Cornell student and the average GPA of a CMU in a given department or as a whole and you can begin to get an idea of the grade inflation at each school. Granted, this is a crude measure.

Very crude in deed. I don't even think Cornell releases average GPAs.

Tsenguun: I did not mean anything by the post other than providing information from my point of reference to the ambiguous question.
Jeez, I am out of this forum.
I posted one thread asking opinions about hotels and was accused of having a homesick kid and now this.
I thought that Cornell was a nice place.

I'm not sure if you say that affirmatively or sarcastically, but I'll respond to the latter. I also don't think Cornell releases that information; I tried looking but didn't come across any such reported data. I was just saying that if he could find those elusive average GPAs, then they would only be a crude measure of grade inflation/deflation in comparison to another school. Furthermore, the only GPA I found for CMU was the GPA of admitted/enrolled freshmen. In any case, you'd need much more detailed information to determine inflation at one school or another.

I wasn't being sarcastic.

No harm no foul eh? Sorry, but my thread in another forum got me a little antsy, you would know lol.

You should be prepared on online forums for some rude words LOL. And not only Cornellians hang around the Cornell subforum.

ok guys, the reason why i was asking this question was cuz im at carnegie mellon right now and im thinking of transferring to cornell ilr. cmu has been really hard so far. i wanted to know if cornell was harder or easier. basically, i really wanna go to nyu or columbia law school and all the law schools care about is one thing: grades, not your major or how hard classes you took. and of course the lsat's. so i was wondering if cornell would help me in achieving that.

cornell ilr would definitely be easier than tepper or any of the engineering courses at cmu. not sure about the humanities/social sciences. but cmu is known to be a grind. cornell ilr is not.

google median grade reports at cornell and you will find all sorts of information. the atlantic monthly also ran an article on grade inflation at cornell last year.

Yea, for the most part I supported what you said in that other forum.

Cornell ILR is pretty easy grade-wise. The median grade is usually around a B+ meaning 50% get a B+ or higher than that. One of my closest friends is an ILR; if you do all the reading and participate in your classes, you should do well in ILR. ILR places lots of kids into top law schools and prepares them well.
