I am a senior to Colgate and I agree with those who say that drinking and the Greek scene are not the only social options here. For example, Colgate brings in bands, free movies, and sponsors other activities. As far as Greek life is concerned, about 30% of students are involved. That means that nearly 70% do not partake in Greek life. One of the best things about Greek life at Colgate is that you do not feel excluded if you are not a part of it. You can still attend parties if you want and you are not looked down upon for not joining.

Dear emi520 ,

Thanks for that great response, that is what I was worried about, Greek Life, Booze, and Sports as being predominant, my son enjoys playing sports but at an intramural level, enjoys music, and movies, as I stated before my hope is that he would not be out of "the Scene." I think East Hall would be best for him since it restricts a lot of partying, no booze, etc.
What is your opinion?

That 30% is a little miss leading. It includes freshmen who can't rush. When you include only people who are able to rush, it is in the high 40's.

It is my opinion that your son should be making his own housing decision. He's the one who literally has to live with it. If he decides he wants to drink, he'll do it even if he lives in East, and there is really not that much you could do about it at that point. If he decides he likes the environment of East on his own, good for him. If not, you should respect his decision.

i heard greek life gets really really lame after a few months- and that the real fun is going to apt parties etc... is this so?

and i also thought u cant go to greek parties after freshmen year if you arent in one?

Any student can attend parties or events put on by greek organizations. most greek parties are "catered"which means that an outside catering company is brought in to provide food, drinks, and bouncers. men from the catering company stand by the door, check IDs, and put bracelets (over or under 21 bracelets) on each person's wrist. so for those parties, everyone is invited.

if your son doesn't want to drink, he can still have fun in any dorm. there are plenty of people who are not into the party scene who live in each dorm. east has a stronger committment to healthy living, but again, there are people in east who do choose to party outside of the dorm. i would suggest that your son preference whichever dorm he feels most comfortable in. i know a bunch of people who loooved east, regardless of their drinking habits. but he can make friends and feel comfortable in any of the dorms.

as yes, you are right, the percentage is in the 40% for greek life since you can't rush until sophmore year.

Greeek Schmeeek! Does the term Roofie mean anything to you people?
C'mon . . . . I mean, you can live just about anywhere that will accept you, but why bother if its bothersome? Colgate has a problem--live with it or leave it. 'nough said.

Not true if the party's inside and not advertised on campus. The bouncers have memorized lists of names and faces to admit into the frat parties. I nearly attacked a bouncer a couple weeks ago for not admitting a pretty girl....

That's how lame frat parties can get at times- not letting in girls!!!!

/rant. LOL No more frat parties for me anyway since the frat guy that I wanted to see is about to graduate.

Apartment parties are better place to be really because you're with good people who have opened their doors and space to you.
