Is college assignment random?

Are you randomly assigned to the residential colleges? How does the process work exactly? When do we know which college we are in? Are some colleges better than others? (I know that's a loaded question since you will have your biases surely) Any info would be appreciated.

From what I keep on hearing, you’re randomly assigned to a college, and then you’re hooked up with a roommate based on the questionnaire they send you.

Are you randomly assigned to the residential colleges?
College assignment is “random with an asterisk,” meaning that the assignments are mostly random, with some adjustments for demographic equality among the colleges. If you had an immediate family member who went to Rice, then you can request to either be assigned to or not be assigned to their college.

How does the process work exactly?
Pretty much what I said above. You can also request to room with or be placed in the same college as someone else in your class, but you both have to sign off on it. You can also request not to be roomed with someone, but that doesn’t have to be mutual. Once you’re placed in the colleges, the O-Week coordinators (upperclassmen who the university puts in charge of everything…it’s pretty cool) place you in rooms based on your roommate questionnaire.

Are some colleges better than others?
Lovett is the best. By far. (With rare exception, your college is the best one.) Mind you, some of the colleges are newer and thus have better facilities (Wiess, Martel, Duncan, McMurtry), but the colleges are not made up of the rooms, but of the people who inhabit those rooms.

Assignment is random, but somebody somewhere was having a chuckle when they placed freshman DS in Sid Rich. Big sister was in Lovett. (Rival college - all in good fun) ;)

NYSkins is right about everything except that he claims that Lovett is the best… tut tut

one of my friends told me that there is a portion on the housing app where you can indicate which residential college you prefer? is that true 'cause i loved the college i stayed at during owl days (lovett)
is there any way to beg rice to put us in our residential college of choice i mean i dunno write a letter or something?
'cause i do love lovett very much!

Though I’m sure the people are great, it seemed that Lovett had much worse dorms than the norm.

You can only choose to be in a college (or NOT in that college) if you have a legacy tie… (for example, if your Dad or sibling was a member of a college, you could request to be in or not in that college.) Everybody else gets assigned a random college. Don’t worry - you’ll think your college is the greatest. ;)

Don’t worry christine, by the end of O-Week whatever college you’re in will be the best.

Some dorms are better, so from a living perspective you can get lucky (Wiess/Martel/McMurtry/Duncan), not so lucky (the rest) or unlucky (Lovett)

That being said, the colleges are awesome. Lovett throws some of the best parties on Campus while Martel, despite good rooms, isnt a college

It all evens out and you will almost certainly like your college

I don’t get why people say Lovett’s rooms are the absolute worst. Sid’s are almost exactly the same, and the old dorms of Baker, Hanszen, and Will Rice aren’t too great. (Mind you, Baker and Will Rice are getting shiny new things soon, while Lovett’s getting nothing.)

I guess the small windows is what hurts Lovett’s image. Since they re did the HVAC system last summer, the rooms have improved greatly

aw :frowning:
my best friends are in lovett right now…i had hoped i could be with them
knowing my luck i’ll probably be put in a college farrrrr away from them :/

Nothing inside the hedges can be remotely considered “far away”. The best part about not getting assigned to Lovett is the fact that you’d already have friends in another college.

So about this bit:
“You can also request to room with or be placed in the same college as someone else in your class, but you both have to sign off on it.”
 is it guaranteed then that we will be with whoever we sign up with? this is awesome! do we get to indicate that we would like to be in a particular college together?

Yes, you will be placed with whoever you sign up with, and yes, you get to indicate that you would like to be in a particular college together, BUT you don’t get to pick which college. A long time ago (well, seems like it) DD and friend picked to be in same college but not in same room. Friend was upset at which college they got placed in - but it all worked out in the end and they had a great time.

wait so you can get placed in same college but not same room (can’t be roommate/suitemate)

No, you can request to be roommates as well. Just keep in mind that it is indeed a request, and a handful of new students every year don’t end up with the people they requested.

I just thought I would add that Wiess is supreme.

generally goes without saying ;)
