So, I’m wondering which to apply to. I would love to get accepted to COM for television/film, but I don’t have any communications-y ECs.

Plus, I got rejected from Northwestern ED because I applied to their super selective theater program, so I’m very “program concious” right now.

(Err, if you want to know, I have a 1550/2270 SAT (not superscored), and a 3.7 W gpa with taking the hardest courses available.

I do dance preprofessionally and tech for theater at my school, another school, and I did two outside shows. I also edit my school’s literary magazine.)

Is COM that much harder to get into that CAS that it would make BU a “reach” for me?

How competitive is the program in general? How important are HS ECs to the COM people?

from my experience as a senior at bu, com is not harder to get into at all. they actually require most com students, if not all, to have a concentration in cas. i know someone who majored in advertising and concentrated in political science. so there is no increased difficulty, though com is renowned as a wonderful program. what you’re probably thinking is this: cas is a liberal arts college so its not a program for people to be impressed at because it ranges from neuroscience and biochemistry to archaeology and geology. sargent, com, eng, cfa, smg, etc are all specialized colleges with actual programs in specific fields, which is why they are all renowned. fyi, i was accepted to cas and transferred to sargent in mid november. easiest thing to do, i just needed a 2.7 gpa lol. only exception is cgs, which is very difficult to transfer out of, if at all possible.

Yeah, it’s just that COM is rated really highly, so I thought it’d be more competitive to get in to than CAS. That’s how it was at Northwestern…

Frankly speaking, COM probably is somewhat harder to get into than CAS. They tell you otherwise, but the programs in each school are very different and there are fewer seats available at COM. Having said this, you’d probably get into COM if you applied. Be more confident!

And yes, you can transfer among schools, quite easily I might add.

Have you looked at CFA at all? BU is investing money to renovate the building and increase the reputation and the quality of the programs. Double majoring in COM and CFA is an option as well I think.
