Is commonapp making getting into college harder?

So I was going through a bunch of stats about college acceptance rate. It seems that almost every top uni. has had a decline in admission rate. All the Ivies have went down (except for like 1) and by a lot. The top 4 all have rates lower that 6%!!! When they used to be ~10%.

I feel like it's because of the commonapp, and the ease at which it is to send in an application. Years ago, when supplements were annoying to fill out/find, and there were different apps for every school, people may only have applied to a couple schools. Now, it's so easy to send in an app. (this can be seen by the exponential increase in apps at unis.) that people are applying to 10 - 15 colleges each!!!!

What do you guys think?

Just because the acceptance rates are down, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s any more difficult for the best students to get in to the top colleges, as a whole. It does probably mean that for marginal students, there is a whole lot more competition and where you used to be able to get into HYP with a legacy and middling test scores, you’re now edged out by more qualified candidates.

By that logic colleges will also continue to have decreasing yields, which will in turn cause them to accept more students as a whole.

Possibly. Which might also be why you see some schools starting to accept 30-40% of their class via ED. They want to lock them in ASAP.
