Is Communications Studies a joke major at UCLA?

To add to this, Comm isn’t a joke at UCLA. I’ve got two good friends (one who is the president of the org Inquiringmind is referring to, UCA) who are pretty top notch in all respects and will be doing some awesome stuff following graduation - law school (got into a top 5 school) while the other is doing non-profit work or work at a marketing firm afterwards.

binks09 junior college is not an extension of high school. i dont where you got your information from.

celtics don’t listen to mnop. you can find many opportunities with a communication degree. you just to have look and work real hard to get the position and salary you want. having a bs degree somewhere in science does not mean anything. and also congratulations to your admission to UCLA! I got in there too as a transfer.

^ That’s what everyone says. Yes, that’s including the guys from junior college; but maybe its different from college to college.

Where do I get my information from? Seriously? I never took community college classes in high school, but I knew plenty of people who did and easily pulled 4.0’s taking multiple night classes.

lol um thats funny cause i heard otherwise from other comm majors about getting a job…most comm majors i know are going to law school cause they cant find a job lol…an undergrad degree in something other than engineering guarantees u nothing, be it a nonsci or sci degree lol

@mnop44: this is why you have no friends http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-los-angeles/843511-i-had-really-bad-first-quarter-am-i-screwed-forver.html</a>

@xiverz: congratulations! hope to see you there if we both decide to go. i’m still waiting for Marshall/USC, Haas/Berkeley, and Stern/NYU. UCLA was my backup school. i’m majoring in business and focusing in finance. what area will u concentrate on in UCLA’s comm program?

^lol someone is a CREEEEPER…who has nothing better to do with his time than stalk and creep lol

South Campus majors whine too much. **** already with your “north-campus-majors-are-a joke-rants”

watch it s01, generalize more please? (and aren’t you whining a bit too…)

//offended engineer.

ihateceltics, I think you will be okay. Nobody I know looks at it as a joke major, but yes, in this shyte economy a comm. degree BY ITSELF does not carry as much weight as an engineering degree… but that’s why people get involved in stuff outside of school… baaadaaboobaadaabing.

also, congrats on getting in, it is a huge accomplishment! don’t let any friendless people get you down.

I agree with mnop. Comm is def a joke major. I would feel sorry for my life if this is the best major I could get into. Surely your job prospects will be nothing compared to all engineering majors.

don’t know about other south campus/north campus majors but all of my engineering buddies I know either have gotten full time offers before graduation or have a combination of grad school (M.S) and internship… just sayin…

lolol what a ■■■■■

Sopheee, regarding your comment about the value of a comm degree in today’s economy, by the time ihateceltics graduates the economy will likely have recovered. Don’t let the economy deter you from pursuing a comm degree.

Wow lots of hating on non-science degrees here, what gives? Some people should get off their high horse and realize science degrees aren’t better, they’re just different. Of course it’s true (for most at least) that engineering, chem, bio, etc will be more difficult than history, english, psych, etc; it’s also true that science degree holders will usually have more offers with higher pay right after graduation, nothing new there. The big difference in my opinion is that those with scientific degrees can rely solely on their degree to get them a job whereas most with social science degrees will have to rely on their ability to interview, people skills, personality, and even luck to land a good job.

Props to all those sticking with engineering all the way through, but just remember, those of us (I’m a psych major) majoring in what you consider easy majors aren’t too dumb to be in your major but just have different priorities. For example I don’t like studying so I don’t very often, I can spend my time doing more enjoyable activities such as partying, camping, canyoneering on weekdays, spending time at the rock wall, surfing, etc. Yea you’ll be making a lot more than me after graduation but I’ve realized that there’s a lot more to life than money and there’s no way I could sit in a lab and do research for 40+ hours a week. I’d rather make less and do something I enjoy that involves interacting with people.

To each their own.

lol…

Anyway, we all know that Math and Philosophy are the only true intellectual pursuits. There’s no use bickering over anything less.

@mnop444 - You stated that you received “an 800” on the writing portion of the SAT and that the lowest grade you had received on a “north campus essay” was 95%; that should not impress anyone as the context of that information is not suffice [to do so].

The classes you had taken were probably lower division and the essays were certainly not research papers. It is more plausible to receive a high grade when you write a simple essay. Whereas, if you are writing a research paper you must analyze, interpret, and argue. Successfully proving a principle requests an extensive amount of work and evaluation–simple lower division essays, certainly, do not.

Each field has their significance, people debating over such have none.

@elementfool Yup, the economy has definitely recovered since 2010. All the Communications majors I know are graduating with automatic six figure jobs and driving around Porsches
