Is computer engineering right major for me?

Hi i am an junior in high school and i have an hobby for computers. Such as games, hardware (obsessed with fast hardwares (CPU, GPU) and is always on the internet for variety of entertainment. I am currently taking AP Java and it's interesting to learn but i have hard times catching the concepts quickly which makes me less wanting to major in computer science. However, i have a very big interest in PLAYING the computer as well as want to create games but isn't really interested in programming.

Is computer engineering right for me?

Computer science and engineering are best for those who like math and programming.

I don’t know.
Using the computer, or liking the computer does not mean you will be a successful engineer. On the other hand, its a good place to start (to have that enthusiasm).

You can start college and take some courses in EE, CS, CE, and so forth. See how you like it and go from there.

computer engineering is a lot of building circuits, coding in very low level languages and integrating the circuits to digital logic. there is less emphasis on software. to break into the game industry you’ll need to have 5+ years of software experience and have already written 6 of your own games.

I say go for it. I love building circuits and integrating them with processors/fpga and such

Just another thing to consider…

If Computer Engineering doesn’t seem to be within your reach or what you want to do, you could also look into an Information Systems program.

Basically, it deals more with the business side of computers and how to utilize technology in business.

Example
[Information Systems](http://www.csun.edu/catalog/informationsystems.html)

Try to find a program that sets you up for a B.S. in Information Systems or Computer Information Technology rather than a Business Administration w/ MIS Focus.

Information Systems is also called Management Information Systems or Computer Information Systems at other colleges, but try to find a program that suites the type of training you want to use in your career.

For the most part, it doesn’t really entail any sort of theoretical math (at my college you only have to go as high as Statistics for Business) and you only have to take the intro programming courses.

Sounds like you’d make a good technician for sure (Geek Squad people).

Will you make a good engineer? Geek Squad people probably have no clue how to build a curcuit, the advanced physics behind a machine, how to write low level code to run a machine, the mathematics behind it, efficiency, and much more.

When you major in Computer Engineering, you’ll have a good understanding of how a computer works and also some high level programming experience (C++ and/or Java). If you’re up for the challenge and interested and willinging to study, then CompE is right for you. You’ll be piecing together the curcuits for a video card and write the code to run it instead of buying one at the store and having it magically work for you (that’s what Geek Squad people think haha).
