Is Computer Science an applied science? Confused

I'm confused about Computer Science. I applied to my school, got in with that selected major, and I signed up for the College of Engineering and Applied Science. When I had to pick housing, I picked a dorm that has College of Arts and Sciences. Does that science include Computer science? I got an email from my brother (who goes there) saying I need to change because I applied to the engineering and applied science school. Couldn't it just be a science?

At your university it sounds like a CS major is only available through the college of engineering and is considered an applied science. A few universities offer a CS major through both colleges (engineering and arts&sciences) but it sounds like yours does not, so you should follow your brother's advice and change your dorm.

Computer science is applied discrete mathematics. It should either be in the mathematics department, combined with the electrical engineering department, or it should stand alone. In theory.

In the case of your school, you're better off calling them and asking than listening to your brother.

Are we talking about the University of Colorado at Boulder? Their computer science program is administered through the College of Engineering and Applied Science and NOT the College of Arts and Sciences. A simple look at their website would have told you that.

Or are you more interested in the philosophical question about the difference between a science and an applied science?

Yes, I'm just going to switch dorms. My brother works in housing, so he knows what he's talking about, and I did follow up with a phone call.
Thanks all.

Barium, you must know your schools very well. I'm quite surprised.
