I took the PSAT last fall. I scored a 1410 (211), which does not meet last year’s state cutoff. I, however, am still eligible for NHRP. As far as I am aware, NHRP does not require the SAT. There is not a huge emphasis on the SAT here and I am happy with my ACT scores. I plan on possibly taking a couple subject tests for schools that recommend them, but is it worth it to take the SAT for condemned scholar?
Little Freudian slip…but I’m guessing you meant “Commended” and not “condemned”?
I don’t know the specifics of NHRP, but you definitely don’t need an SAT score for Commended status. Commended is strictly a function of PSAT score. The “confirming” SAT score is only required for a National Merit Semifinalist to advance to Finalist. If your 211 puts you within a point or two of your state’s cutoff score, it might be worth your while to take it on the chance that your state cutoff might shift next year and your score could qualify. Many of the National Merit scholarships are also available to NHRP students, but there are some that are not. Depending upon what schools you are considering, it could make a difference for you. If your state cutoff was a fair bit higher than 211 though, the odds are pretty slim.
You should definitely research SAT requirements for NHRP to make sure whether you need it or not. There are some great scholarship opportunities available to you through NHRP, and even if those schools are only financial safeties for you I think it’s an avenue you should pursue.
Good Luck to you!
