Is Cornell gay friendly?

I was admitted (Yay!) but when I tried to look into this topic, I found conflicting responses. Is there (a substantial amount of) homophobia at Cornell or is gayness generally accepted? I've heard of conflicts when it comes to the Greek system. Does anyone have information about that? Does anyone know if there are lgbt groups that meet regularly? Any other information?
Thanks a lot :)

Hmm… can’t really tell you from experience, but it is an interesting question. I am assuming that Cornell MUST have a LGBT type of group… BUMP.

For the most part it’s accepted, but obviously not as accepted as you would hope, I imagine. You’ll always have those ultra conservatives who think anybody that isn’t a white straight male is inferior to them. You’ll also have the conservatives who are just coming to accept some of these views.

For the most part we’re a liberal campus though, and yes you will certainly find other lgbt people around and there are definitely clubs/groups on campus.

Well, I found this:

[LGBT Resource Center](<a href=“LGBT Resource Center | Student & Campus Life | Cornell University”>http://www.lgbtrc.cornell.edu/)

Cornell is definitely gay friendly. some of my best friends are gay (and in frats, i should add) and no one ever treats them differently

yeah, I can speak from experience, I haven’t found a single person who has treated me differently.

I also know a fair number of gay brothers in frats, you just have to be careful about which frat you want to join.

Cornell itself tries its hardest to provide resources and support for LGBT students. We have a Gay Straight Alliance which meets regularly on mondays, a gay-friendly club/bar (that the GSA regularly hosts trips to), and some students are currently trying to start an LGBT run student publication and an LGBT student council.

cornell (the institution) is probably more race friendly than gay friendly…

i’d say that there are more closeted folks than there are folks who are out…

the gay dating scene is not that great…

is it easy for straight people to get involved with support for the LGBT community? (ex. the day of silence, or other events/activities?)

It is true that there are a lot of closet cases on campus (repeat, a lot), but that doesn’t mean Cornell isn’t gay friendly. It means that the students aren’t ready to be open about their sexuality. There was a good article in the sun just friday about that exact topic.

There’s also a new, gay-interest fraternity… but I, too, have gay friends in frats. Some are more welcoming than others, but you have a semester and rush week to find a good fit!

And Cornell does have an active LGBTQ organization. Check it out!

What fraternity?
