Is Cornell looked down upon by the other Ivies?

To current or past students: have you ever had a conversation with someone who put down Cornell because they consider it the lowest of the ivy league schools?

or

have friends or anyone brought up how Cornell is supposedly the "worst" ivy, even though that is not true (i don't think we can say which Ivy is the worst).

Yup, but only by the n00bs in the other ivies.

And now for the daily thread topic!

Here's the situation: If you meet someone from HYP (maybe even C), they'll invariably respond when informed you went to Cornell: "Oh that was my safety."

It's not sneered at really. The other Ivy students simply don't believe it's as good as their school (well other than Brown. Most people consider that to be the worst Ivy.)

Actually, after college, out in the working world, it would be the rare snob who would ever look down upon your Cornell degree, no matter what school that snob attended. In all of the years that I've been working and going to graduate school, I've never once heard anyone say a single negative thing about the quality of a Cornell degree versus any other, except to praise it.

I have heard someone at another school deride Cornell.

Then again, he's the sort of person that mixes up "then" and "than", spells (and says!) supposedly as "supposably", once asked if I could eat fish during a conversation where he was querying my vegetarianism, hyper compensates the correct possessive "your" to "you're" and the correct possessive "their" to "they're", and voted for Obama.

Actually, that last one is a bit irrelevant. (I suppose I'm just in a grumbly mood, it being inauguration day)

I've heard that cornell is "the easy" ivy to get into, but then that person quickly adds, "but it's still a really good school."

Then again, I've heard similar things about hyp, like how they're losing their prestige, due to accepting people with legacies, athletes, etc. I don't know how true this is, though. I read an article about how the second-tier schools are right on hyp's asses though, reputation-wise.

^I don't think HYP are losing prestige because of athletes/legacies/urm. Even if you are an athlete/legacy/urm, you're still not going to get into HYP without a decent GPA/SAT. Besides, all colleges select certain students because of those factors, so HYP aren't really different in that regard...to be honest, I think they'll always be the most elite, but it's not as if people look down on the other Ivies. good thing i'm going to Yale Law :)

hmm i've heard people say Brown is the "worst" Ivy more often than Cornell, just cause it's ranked lower, and High schoolers are big on rankings..

I have friends in all 8 ivies, and when I mentioned i'm trying to transfer to cornell, they all wished me luck and said it was such an awesome school. most people seem to think it's very competitive...you know that phrase, "easiest ivy to get into, toughest to graduate from". lots of people also seem to mention the food is really good for whatever reason

I've worked with Ivy alums from every school save Columbia and I've never experienced anything other than good-natured ribbing. Which just so happens to go both ways.

I've never had anyone say anything negative about Cornell, I try not to let people know where I go when I'm back home because the "you must be really smart" thing gets old

I've never heard someone say Brown was the worst Ivy for any other reason than the USNews rankings...

What a ridiculous question. -_-

I hope no one's self-esteem is seriously that low. -__-

it doesn't matter what you do in life, someone will always act like they're better than you. look at george bush. he was the freaking president of the united states, and millions of people mocked him, called him stupid, bought "rock against bush" CD's, etc.

if you get in to cornell and want to go, then go. it's pretty simple.

Now we're talking Choklit.

If people making fun of Cornell bothers you that much, you really might have to reflect what you're really searching for in a college.

very true Amadeuic. I mean, i go to Rutgers of all places. Rutgers, otherwise known as Slutgers.

But I like it.

yeah exactly Brown is one of the best colleges in the world, but because it's ranked lowest of the ivies, it gets that "worst ivy" rep, or at least that's what a couple of my more ignorant classmates would say in HS. let's be honest, who really cares about rankings - it's always the HS kiddies and their parents. oh, and certain penn students. and then there's the people who say it's just a hippie school filled with uber liberals, but we nyu students know that's really us lol

Well, if they say anything, you can always say that none of the other schools can claim Andy Bernard. =)

Well, if they say anything, you can always say that none of the other schools can claim Andy Bernard. =)

Haha, yeah seriously, last I checked Andy Bernard went to Cornell. That's it, case-closed, consider this thread dead.

Oooh, I think I got a veiled shout-out.

As for the OP. Few people think Cornell is "bad" or "worse" than other Ivies; certainly in terms of education, this is not the case. However, it is as a whole the least selective Ivy League school.

If you're as shallow as I am, and this bothers you, than simply get your 3.8 and transfer to a higher ranked school (believe me - it IS that easy).

If not, collect your superb education, have a great time, and graduate.

My child chose Cornell University over Upenn because her college, AAP, perennially ranks number 1 in the country for five year architectural programs. The school received the top ranking in this year's annual survey conducted by DesignIntelligence (DI). The 2009 list marks the fourth time in the past five years that this Cornell program has been ranked number one of the top 20 architecture programs in the U.S. Where does Upenn rank with respect to this major? Oh, right, they don't even offer a comparable major.

BTW, Cornell is also ranked number one in veterinary science this year. Where is Upenn in regard to veterinary science?

Also, we much prefer Cornell's beautiful campus and surroundings versus Upenn's.
