I am really interested in Virginia Tech, as it has almost everything I'm looking for in a college, I think I'd have a good shot of getting in (so I won't bother posting my credentials). The one thing I'm hesitant about is the Corps of Cadets, as I'm definitely shooting for AFROTC and NROTC. My main reason for not applying to the academies is that I want to have a normal social life, instead of the military one while I'm in college. So I'm not sure the sucky social life and heavy restrictions are worth it, even though the Corps is highly regarded. Any opinions? Particularly from current/post Cadets or parents.

Post in the Virginia Tech forum and ask.

I know a few students in the Corps of Cadets and ROTC at Tech, and they pretty much agree that there isn’t too much of a social life freshman year. It’s pretty much PT, study, class, study, other extracurriculars, study, sleep, repeat. After that, they say, it gets slightly better.

Even though Tech is a normal college, it’s still a SMC, so it’s not as “normal” like other colleges’ ROTC battalions. I think you should look at regular ROTC units if you definitely want a normal social life.

Thanks, will do.

Just a plug for the Corps… both hubby and I thoroughly enjoyed our time in it and would EASILY choose it again. Can you spend a night to see what you think? If it’s for you, you should get a good vibe. If not, ditto. Looking at it on paper is nowhere near the same as “being there.”
