Title says it all....

Yes: it’s not related to curriculum, you spent time on it, you did something you liked, and you learned from it.

It falls into the category of computers and programming. It is an EC as much as sports, photography, or community service is.

Definitely put that down on your college application. It will help a lot, especially when the ability to make stuff like Facebook apps are quite rare compared to some other ECs you see around.

Yeah, that’s programming and coding work, I assume; it’s also quite impressive.

Well, anyone can make a facebook app. It depends on how complicated/what it was.

I’ve heard of someone getting accepted into top schools for a popular program (MOD) he made, that was used in popular games.

i actually think thats really cool. i always wondered who made those things.
yea put it on your apps. that shows a lot of self motivation and sets u apart from the average applicant.

I’m quite curious since I’m on Facebook a lot. Which application did you create?

There are a few things you have to consider. The geenration reading your application aren’t that into facebook, friendster, and myspace. Many have seen their kids “waste” their lives away camped in their rooms surfing those websites, instead of doing more “productive” things like sports or “real” ECs. They might think you’re one of them. I know that a Harvard guy created facebook and there’s a Stanford class for creating facebook apps, but this doesn’t mean it’s won everyone’s approval.

They MIGHT think that including a facebook app is trivial and is a sign of desparation. If they do think so, you’re definitely spoiling your application if it doesn’t fit in with the rest of your ECs. So don’t let it look like resume padding.

And yes, anyone could create a facebook app, so you’ve got to see how impressive it is. It doesn’t need to be Scrabulous, but it probably has to be moderately successful. Make sure it’s PG, too.

If it were up to me, I’d have nothing against that, but our parents are reading those college apps. it’s really up to luck I guess.

uh, not me. And not most people I know

i dunno to me it seems it would just make the admissions officetrs laugh

if you put real effort and dedication into it and want colleges to know, then put that on there. who cares what people think about your work? that product is your baby–be proud.

Anyone can make a facebook app in the same way anyone can volunteer or play sports or do theater.

Remember that many admissions offices employ recent grads, people who are familiar with facebook. It’s not all old fuddy duds working in admissions.

I thought the post title was “Is creating a facebook an EC”, but then I took the time to read it :P

Anyhow, like many others, I’m curious to know what the app is. Is it widely used? How complex is it? What is it about? What major do you have in mind?

It’ll vary. It could be non-noteworthy, but it could slightly boost your application.

Not everyone can make a facebook app. It requires that you have a fair amount of skill in programming and web development. Unlike the rest of Facebook, it is not easy and straightforward. It requires thorough understanding of the API, lots of work, and lots of testing.

Saying that is similar to saying that everyone can be Siemens Semifinalists. Sure, it’s possible, but that’s not going to happen unless you’re particularly talented in that area.

Thinking about everyone’s general assumptions on this, I think it’d be very important to mention the things done to make the Facebook app. It’s like building an amusement park vs going to one.

Which app is it?

lol i can see how the op might be hesitant to reveal which app it is
