Is creative writing considered a valid extracurricular?

Hey CC,

I have looked at profiles of many successful applicants to top colleges, and noticed that they tend to have either sports or some kind of art (like an instrument.) I have neither, but I enjoy creative writing. I am a member of my school’s creative writing publication and the school newspaper. Would those be valid/less impressive than a sport or instrument?

I would definitely include these activities as extracurriculars on your college application.

They are as valid as the other ECs!

Check out the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards!

Yes, creative writing can be a valid EC–especially if you have been published.

Seems like it would work just fine for colleges, definitely atleast as much as any person playing a sport at a varsity level.

The idea behind ECs is to do things you enjoy, care about etc. All ECs, including your participation in the schools’ newspaper and creative writing publication are looked favorably upon. Don’t waste time comparing what you do to what others do – instead focus on presenting what you have done in the most favorable light.
