I tested out of Spanish (all 4 semesters) when I took the placement test. Do I receive credit for those classes, or not? I called the office to ask and the lady told me yes. My friend called too and a different person told him no. So what is the truth?
No, you do not get credit simply for testing out of the language requirement.
However, if you took AP Spanish in HS, you can get credit for the AP class. But that’s mutually exclusive from testing out of Spanish. You can test out of Spanish without having ever taken AP Spanish–and get no credit. Or you can get credit for AP Spanish but somehow not test out of the language requirement.
The answer is different depending if you are in CoE or LSA. I believe @brantley is correct for LSA. If you are in CoE, see http://www.engin.umich.edu/college/academics/bulletin/admissions/first-year.
“CoE will grant credit for students passing a language placement test offered by the College of LSA provided the student has previously studied that language in a course in their secondary education. This will be verified using their high school or college transcripts.”
@MomOf2TeenGirls Thanks for the clarification! Yes, my answer was for LSA.
For my D in CoE, she got credits from both AP Spanish and placement exam (4 credits each and 8 credits total). That is how it is shown on my D’s transcript. So they are not mutually exclusive.
^^Yes, I clarified that I was just referring to LSA.
