I know that EECS is the most competitive major at UCB. I was wondering how selective the CS major in College of Letters & Science is...

Admission to L&S is much easier. I have never heard of someone with near-perfect gpa and test scores being turned away from L&S, but I know it happens in EECS. I’m hoping it only happens rarely (since my son is applying to EECS). If you are applying as a freshman, you aren’t admitted to a specific major. Everyone that is admitted to L&S is undeclared and you apply for the major after you are there and have completed the prerequisites. L&S CS used to let anyone that finished the prereqs with a major gpa of 2.0 into the major. It just changed to 3.0. So once you get to Cal, as long as you maintain a major gpa of 3.0, you’re admitted to CS.

I happened to read this on another post:

posted by berkeley17: “I know a friend who applied to EECS last year with a 4.6 GPA and 2350 SAT score and was outright rejected (his appeal was also rejected).”

However dina4119 seems to disagree with me: “I have to disagree that a 4.25 and 2370 ALONE will get you in, I knew/know of people in high school with 2200+ SAT and around 4.3 gpa who couldn’t get in to either UCLA or Berkeley.” She doesn’t mention which major they were applying to and I suspect they were NOT applying to L&S.

Before UC Statfinder went away, it indicated for 2008-2009, admission to Berkeley L&S was likely (not certain) with >=4.2 GPA and >=1800 SAT or >=4.0 GPA and >=2100 SAT, while admission to Berkeley engineering was likely (not certain) with >=4.2 GPA and >=2100 SAT (GPA as UC weighted, so maximum possible is probably around 4.3 to 4.4).

That’s good to know! Since I have a low SAT score of 1890 and just an okay application, I think I’ll definitely apply to L&S because all I care about is CS and fortunately Berkeley offers equal CS courses in both cases. xD
