Is Dance a hook?

I see so many other sports discussed here, but only a rare mention of dance. Please share your experiences/impressions of how schools view a serious dancer.

I think they’d see them as any other applicant. Keep in mind that it’s not quite as good in terms of admissions as being a superb runner or field hockey player because most schools do not have a competitive dance program. However, if you have a fair amount of talent or training, it could be considered a lesser sport and a good art background. I’m not sure what your other qualifications are, but dance could be considered a hook.

It could be, but it mainly depends on where you’re applying and the applicant pool there. A hook is something that makes you unique; if the applicant pool at a certain school for a particular year lacks dancers, then that could be considered a hook. However, if there’s a fair amount of other dancers that applied to a certain school for a particular year, then it wouldn’t be considered a hook.

A dance hook seems possible but largely circumstantial based on the schools you’ve applied to and the applicant pool there at the given year.

As the parent of a serious dancer, I’d say the answer is…not really! It depends so much on the school! My biggest concern was finding schools that had the right combo of dance and academics. It’s not like a sport or a school orchestra where the schools need a certain number of athletes to field a team or that viola player to round out the string section (for example). Dance is tricky to depend on as a “hook” because although it shows dedication and passion and talent, if the school doesn’t have an existing dance program, they don’t necessarily “need” dancers. Hope that makes sense!

What if they have no male dancers and you happen to be one? My brother spent many of his elementary school years being a party boy (in the Nutcracker, that is). :D

It depends on the school…there are definitely schools with Dance programs who are looking for talented dancers to help build up their programs, and the best way the can is to enroll experienced dancers and they actively seek them out in admissions.

Thanks all. I’m just thinking ahead. We have a few years before my next child applies.

I think the term “hook” is overused - but I think dance may be important because it demonstrates Passion!

It depends on the school, but my d’s “sport” was dance. She was very close with the other “arts” students verses the "jocks’. But at many school dancers are respected for their craft and are supported by everyone!

I’m it sure about the term hook, but I think it definitely demonstrates commitment, responsibility, and passion for an EC.
