Is Dartmouth hurting for apps?

Most of you are aware of the new January 21st deadline for (some) applicants, and many of you probably got a letter.

Why would they extend the deadline, considering their supplement is quite easy, and how did they decide to whom to send the letters?

I was kinda wondering that myself, but if they are hurting for apps it would quite a shocking turnaround from just a few weeks ago when they were reporting a bumper crop of ED apps.

Many schools extend deadlines and accept late applications. If they have the capacity to review them why not? It just let’s them reject more so their selectivity rating goes up. I’ll bet we see an increase in applications over last year. Dartmouth has done this for years. They know there are lots of good students who just got a reality check from SCEA at Yale and Stanford, ED at Wharton and Brown who will quickly choose to cast a wider net.

ivy league school hurting for apps? don’t think so.

Who got the letter?

I got the letter and I am multi-ethnic. It came from “outreach” at admissions

seems to be sent to URMs…S got one

There have been many areas of the country that have missed schools due to the weather condition.
Extending deadlines is a way of leveling the playing feild and giving students an opportunity to apply.

Don’t worry, Dartmouth is not at a loss for students because at the end of the day they are going to still extend only ~ 2000 offers of admissions (including ED)
