College-woot, I would say Stanford is not nearly as known in most of Canada as Harvard, MIT, Yale, Princeton ............... Columbia, Cornell. Maybe it's different on the west coast?

JIMMY, how come you know tons of people who got a 2400? I dont think there are more than few hundreads of people who get it per year in the world

nauru, in toronto at least stanford is definitely heard of. i'm not sure about elsewhere.

Yeah I'm from Toronto. I thought maybe you were from somewhere else. IMO many people have heard of Stanford, but it is not nearly as well-known as those other schools. Whatever, maybe it depends on the school/social circles, I dunno.

ha ha, there are so many Torontonians responding to this.

there are so few people in Quebec apply to US....

Quebec? I thought you guys just separated and made your own little country?

Wow, ignorance is so cool...

well, partially true but I am not a native quebecois so I dont give a f uck about them, but there r still soem anglophones in montreal

Don't worry about it. The only schools that are truly known internationally are Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Yale, Oxford, Cambridge, and MAYBE UC Berkley, NYU, Columbia, LSE, SOAS, MIT, and UChicago depending on which region you go to or which field you're in.

^ Are you really not going to include Cornell in that list?

cornell is really not internationally known

Alot of ppl know about Cornell:)..I heard it's somewhat an Asian school with a really large number of Asians there:)

cornell really is. more so than u-chicago and columbia in places like the middle east and india.

and is NYU well-known internationally?

depends on where you're looking. i know from experience that middle east/india not so much. places like canada and the uk definitely.

Are we talking about the general population or are we talking about the educated elites? Dartmouth, as well as most top US universioties are well known to the educated elites. To the general population, Harvard is probably the only well known university. Berkeley, MIT, Princeton, Yale and maybe Stanford are well known. Other than those, I'd say US universities aren't that well known to the general public.

Educated elites = Ivies + Stanford,MIT,Caltech,Berkeley. maybe UChic,Northwestern and Duke
Lay person = Harvard, Yale,Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Berkeley.
I was telling one of my American Degree Program friend that i might be applying to Brown, she gave me this..."why?what school is that"-look... well even those doing transfer program to the states do not necessarily know the 8 ivies...hahaha
Oh, and not many people (even those currently in business school or business related course) know about Wharton... haha sad but true...

In Sweden (Scandinavia, Europe..) people know about Harvard, Princeton and Yale, a few have heard about of Columbia and Stanford..

Although, the well educated might know of a few more..
