Is deferring admission at a school binding?

I'm interested in taking a gap year, and want to defer admission at one of the colleges I got into--however, I'm almost interested in applying to a few other colleges next year, during my gap year. By deferring admission at that one school, am I agreeing to go there? Is it binding in the same way as early decision is? Thanks!

I expect it depends on the school.
My sister got into Trinity College ED and chose to defer. They wrote her a letter saying that she was welcome to apply to other schools next year, but that if she chose to, she would have to re-apply to Trinity as well.

I'd recommend calling the college and asking about their policy.

Thanks, lioninwinter! I'll do that.

Hey I'm wondering the same thing, so if anyone else knows anything, please reply.

Yeah me too.

The second poster was pretty clear - you need to contact your school to see how they would handle it. Remember that next year is supposed to be the peak year for college applications so the admission percentage may be even lower than this year.
