Is Deviney getting refurbished this summer?

My daughter has a decent housing number (700s), and put down Reynolds and Broward as her first housing choices. However, she heard at preview last week that Deviney is getting a facelift this summer. Deviney has a better location and larger rooms than the other community bath dorms and she's considering switching her preference to Deviney in order to save some money. Has anybody else heard that Deviney is getting some work done (she could have mixed up the dorm names)?

In 2008 or 2009 it was published that FSU had Dorman and Deviney inspected and that they were not worth refurbishing, and that the 10-15 year plan was to build building 3 of Wildwood and then Deviney and eventualy Dorman would be torn down to make way for new dorms. With the current economy, this plan may have been shelved for now. I would call Housing and ask if it s Deviney they are refurbishing. They answer lots of questions over the phone. It might be Deviney and might not. I suspect it will not be a major redo, however. And be warned, when they refurbish dorms, sometimes the price goes up. Deviney might not be the cheapest after a refurbish, so call ask.

My sister put Deviney down as a choice because of the central location, cheaper rent, and after being told at preview tour by dorm guides that Deviney was getting a do over this summer. She asked if that meant they were just going to paint and the dorm hosts/guides said a little more like re-doing the closets somehow or a few other little things. Doubt much else could be done in three months. Maybe it would be smart to double check with housing office about work to be done in Deviney. My sister has a housing priority number under 10 but she is rooming with friend with number around 1000.

Sure enough, Deviney is having $299,000 worth of work done. This amount was put out to bid in Feb or March. I cannot tell all that it involves., but it appears to be asbestos abatement. The work will be done over the summer. Given the budget, I am not sure that much cosmetic work will be done.

Wow, calling asbestos abatement a remodeling is like calling a pig with lipstick a hot babe. Maybe the rents will be going down. i’m calling Sis rat now!

And an update on post #2 above, the third building of Wildwood will start construction in August 2010 to be done March 2012. It will be apartment housing as described here. http://www.facilities.fsu.edu/projecto/ProjectDetail.aspx?ProjectID=3219

I don’t find any other mention of a Deviney project. I suspect there are some who work for housing who have NO IDEA what is going on with the work at Deviney, and they assume it is renovations.

It’s reassuring that the name of the contracting firm doing the asbestos work at Deviney dormitory is RIP (Rest in Peace?)

That’s not much money for any serious asbestos abatement in a building that large.

There must not be much of it.

Under one of the pictures Housing has up on their facebook page it says that Deviney is getting carpets Summer 2010.

Maybe there is asbestos in the flooring, which is harmless if it is left down. The usual way to handle this is to cover over with carpet. There is actually no safely reason to pull up the tile, and it is all-around much safer to leave it and just carpet over. For the budget, my guess is they are laying carpet over old vinyl floor tiles. There would probably not be time to actually pull up the tiles, and the cost in doing so on a building that large, given all of the safety measures needed, could run millions of dollars.

i feel with a priortity number at like 1920 something im not going to get into gilchrist or broward. or even a suite style dorm for that matter. which would be the best community style dorm?

I’d go with Deviney, now that they are adding carpet.

Carpet in dorms is a terrible idea, but it’ll be fine for whoever get it the first year.

palmbeach- I visited FSU last Friday for preview. I went to go see Deviney, and they showed us a ‘remodeled’ dorm (what they will be doing to the rest of them this summer). Like Matt125 said, there is carpet now, which will be good since we will be the first ones to have it. Obviously I don’t know what the dorms in deviney looked like before, but it seems to be that they are just adding carpet and putting a fresh coat of paint. I’ve heard that Smith and Kellum are the worst of the community style dorms…and the location of Deviney and Dorman are much better. So go with Deviney or Dorman! :)
