Direct Hits is definitely the best. It has been the top performing vocabulary book on US and International tests for the past two years.

Yes, it is definitely worth it if you’re not very strong at vocabulary. Look at this recent March SAT; the vocabulary was quite difficult, but Direct Hits had quite a few hits, I believe.

Direct Hits made me change from “most vocab questions wrong” to “sometimes 1 or 2 wrong”

I suggest you buy it immediately. I used it, and for this past March test I got all sentence-completion questions right, and it wasn’t the easiest.

where have people found Direct Hits? Borders has volume 1 for about $108 and volume 2 for $117. What’s the deal??? I did a google search and a got a few hits at about $35 for used but when I click through, they’re out of stock. Anyone find it reasonably priced??

Just go to Amazon. They sell Direct Hits for normal prices.

Here is the Amazon link:

Thank you Dark Knight–just ordered both volumes. Feel kind of foolish that I didn’t just see that on my own yesterday!

Glad I could help you.

Direct Hits is definitely the best vocabulary book.

Thanks to Direct Hits I was able to get my critcal reading score (760) up near my math (780) score and just got into Vanderbilt with a very nice merit scholarship. I tried the various websites and some of the books that are posted regularly on CC but I got the most help from DH.

So will Princeton Review Word Smart do anything for me or close to as much? Can I learn a lot from Word Smart or do I NEED Direct Hits to do well if I’m lacking in vocabulary knowledge?

word smart has a lot of words though…which is good but especially if you have limited time DH spits out the most used words on the SAT

Is Direct Hits a workbook; do you need a new copy of it or will a used one suffice? And is it necessary to get both volumes?

I don’t see why a used one will not work…yeah just get a used one. And yes you need to get both volumes because the 2nd one focuses on the toughest (Level 5) vocab on the SAT.

I love Direct Hits!

I think a used one would be good enough.
WS is good also, imo. I find you need to repeatedly see those words, in review books and in your reading. otherwise the words are not yours.

Haha nice referral link, Dark Knight. How much did you make off that link?

So here’s the deal, I took a look at my full score report, and uh oh.

Sentence Completion: 16 for 19
Passage Based: 35 for 48

So what is the best strategy to improve my passage based, since I clearly suck at it?

^I provided the link so that college1 would know where to go to avoid outrageous/ridiculous prices. Duh - I was trying to help.

And you did, Dark Knight–thanks again.
