I mostly want to discuss in my essay that I am a Christian who believes that everyone, including homosexuals, should have rights, esp. to marry who they want to marry even though I don't agree with homosexuality. I also want to go into how I feel homosexuals are treated unfairly by so many people, esp. by some 'Christians'.

Is this topic too controversial sense it goes into Gay Marriage and Religion?

I think a lot will depend on what kind of school you’re applying to. If you’re applying to a college with a strong commitment to a specific set of religious beliefs, definitely not a good idea. Otherwise, you would still be taking a chance but if it’s a topic you feel strongly about do you want to go to a school that would reject you for having such a strong opinion?

try to make your essay about you, because that is what the admissions people want to learn about. What is unique about you…what unique flavor will you add to the campus that no one else will bring?

Yeah, I’d avoid this topic. Your not telling anything about yourself, but rather what ~50% of Americans agree on.

I’d assume your asking this for the common app essay topic dealing with a controversial event. The general consensus on this forum is to avoid that topic, as your bounded to offend someone.

That can be a fine essay topic if you can personalize it by telling a story about how this came up with your life experience, how you reacted to the situation, why you acted that way, and what it means to you going forward. Make sure you have a couple of trusted people read it to make sure it says something important about you.

^^ Or else it’ll seem very trite, to be frank. It can work – but if you use this as an occasion to get on a soap box rather than to tell people about you, you’ve missed the entire reason why essays are even wanted.

You have about a 50 percent chance that the person reading it will think you are stating the obvious and the other 50 percent will disagree with you. I stand with the majority on here: not a good idea.
