Is duke more presitigious in the South/Northeast?

I'm from Wisconsin and when I tell people I'm going to Duke, they're all like... Oh yeah, they have a good basketball team. I mean people know it's a good school, but they don't really know the academic part of it other than the basketball part.

well its definetly more prestigious in the south... i live down here and its seen very highly both basketball and academics

As a resident of NC, I can tell you that people around here definitely realize that Duke's strong academics, not just the basketball team. I can't speak for the northeast, but I'm sure employers etc. will realize its prestige.

Well, I'm from SC and I get the feeling that Duke is considered the Ivy of the South. Most people where I live would be more impressed with Duke than some Ivies. This is probably because I come from a state with one of the worst public education systems in the country; people actually graduating from high school are a minority (49.2% in 2004). So you can imagine that we don't send many far away.

where do u live in sc

I live in a sophisticated New England suburb and Duke is DEFINITELY viewed as first rate.

Most NC residents think Duke is a good school but overrated (read: too expensive). I've heard more than a few people refer to it as the University of New Jersey at Durham.

In NY, Duke is definitely considered a top school!

Im from Wisconsin too. Where in Wisconsin are u from? It's viewed very highly here in my Milwaukee suburb of Mequon.

Almost all schools are considered more prestigious in the areas they are near. At least, that's how it is where I grew up.

Yep I second that sentiment that SC public schools are sh**ty

My daughter is applying to all the Ivies and Duke. Her college counselor told her that Duke would be a stretch for her, but with a good chance with many of the Ivies. We are from NJ, and she is in a private school that places 30% in Ivies, so that'll tell you how Duke is regarded.

Wow, didn't quite realize New Jerseyans regard Duke so highly oldfort 0.o

But yeah, Duke is definitely considered a top school where I come from (DE, tristate area). Ppl here definitely consider it on par with most of the Ivies.

When I was at Duke (eons ago), we laughed off the the comparison that "Duke is the Harvard of the South." Our belief was that Harvard was "the Duke of the North" :)

I still say that Harvard is the "Duke of the North"

And when I lived in Vermont (until this past summer), I generally got a "good response" from those who found out I was going to Duke. Except for one girl. It made sense, though... generally when you're the child of a man who played basketball for Carolina (at the same time as Michael Jordan, no less), hearing the word "Duke" illicits a rather negative response.

Duke is definetely known as one of the top schools in the country wherever you go...but kids who don't care about how good schools are academically won't recognize any of the top schools, but will still recognize the name Duke because of Dick Vitale touting it to be so good on ESPN. IMO Duke's rep in New England is like Dartmouth/Brown's rep in the South - people know its an elite school, but aren't that familiar with it.

It doesn't have the international recognition of HYPS or Berkeley does, but does that really matter? Employers/grad schools/everyone who matters knows how good it is.

Its top-notch school.. but yeah, definitely not HYPS

Although I don't think the comparison is fair, overall, Duke might not be as good as HYPS but in competitive majors like BME I think it greatly surpasses those schools.

I'm from a relatively upper/middle-class suburb in MA, and around here, while Duke is highly regarded.. it's definitely no HYPS (specifically Harvard, here in MA). And, statistically, it's been much easier to get into for people in my school than Ivies in general. Still, though, looking beyond the name (which, really, you always ought to do), it's a great school, and that's why I'm applying there. Granted, I'm applying to almost all of the Ivies (& Williams) as well, but there are certain Ivies that I'd probably pick Duke over, if I end up with that decision after results come in.

I'm from elitist NY and I agree with the last poster. It is def highly regarded but its no HYP. And it is much easier to get into than the ivies.

Northeasterns, I myself am a lifer, have a sense of elitism and are skeptical of other areas of the country. They like to do things the old fashioned way anf goto places with rich blue blooded Brahmin histories like HYP.
