Not required, but a very good idea. If you don't sign up for it, it just means you need to pick up any refunds from CARS in person at Billing.

is there a deadline by which one must sign up for it or can you do it anytime during the 4 years?

um if you didnt apply for any financial aid/scholarships would you still need EFT? would there be refunds...

Without finaid or loans, having a refund would mean that you overpaid. Assuming you don't, not sure why you would ever use EFT.

On the other hand, it doesn't cost you anything. If you already have an account, setting it up only takes a couple of minutes.

^^ EFT is still useful if you ever win some of Berkeley's random merit-based scholarships

Totally random one was the Kraft Freshman Award. If you get a 4.0 1st semester you automatically win $100-$300.

There's no deadline in terms of "must do it by X day or you forfeit the right to do it at all," as you're free to sign up (or not sign up, or take yourself off the list for a time and then re-sign up) at any time during your stay at Cal.

However, it takes about 7 business days to process your information, so if you're anticipating a refund, you're better off doing it earlier rather than later. Once they've cut the check, I believe, they will not post it to EFT and you must pick that check up.
