is emerson a match?

College freshman finishing first year at UC Santa Barbara, who really wanted to go to NYU Tisch, but didn't get in. Life long interest and activities in film and music, with some student films done during high school in independent workshop. Really wants to transfer out of the sunny campus clime and get into an urban, artsy, film environment. High school gpa 3.8, sats (old ones, not new scale) 1300. Did basic GE courses at santa barbara, but starving for hands on environment. Does he sound like a candidate for Emerson?

i think based on stats it seems like a match. although admissions to a film major probably involved some type of additional supplement/portfolio. this will affect the admissions decisions greatly.

I guess to my question about Emerson I should add, are there other suggestions for this profile besides nyu, chapman, fsu and ucla? Is it more advisable to do a broader undergrad liberal arts degree and put off film school for graduate school? This would be my inclination, but student is eager to be in a production environment.

Usc...........

If they do a film major at a university, they should end up with a good balance of art AND liberal arts. I'm glad that the person is leaning towards that sort of environment.

NYU and UCLA offer the most prestigious film schools in the US, and the others you listed are good. Emerson is a step down in prestige (but not in education), but still a good school. Also check Tufts (due to their ties to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts) and the New School for Social Research (which has ties to Parsons) to see what they offer.

All very helpful. He was so beguiled by the idea of NYU that I don't think he gave other schools a fair consideration. In some ways, I think Emerson is more appealing, but I am personally allergic to anything elitist, which is my own bias. Anyway, as I am the mom, I can only offer ideas and let him pursue them. I will look into Tufts and the New School. Thanks.
