Is Emory really that "new"?

I told my family, friends and teachers that I got into Emory and planned to go there. Their facial impressions, however, weren't what I had expected. I thought they would be happy for me but instead, they were more like confused, feeling bad for me and asked me questions like why I did not choose NYU, and told me it was okay if I did not get into a good college, etc. Most of them never heard of Emory and thought it was a "safety school".

Is Emory really that "new"? My mom says she is not paying for a college that does not have a name. Should I change my mind? ugh I am so confused.

try showing the high USNWR rankings or something

EMORY>NYU
…on that scale

Well it certainly isn’t new that people don’t know about Emory. That’s for sure

People who count know that Emory counts. And if that is a given, then shouldn’t the opportunities and programs be more important than the name itself? NYU has a name–which isn’t as top-regarded in intellectual circles as Emory, by the way–but is worlds apart from Emory as a school. The two are not very comparable when it comes to programs, residential life, campus culture, etc.

^^^ I agree, all of my dad’s medical consultants at the medical schools in Texas (these people are the are chairs of their departments) have ALL HEARD of Emory. While doing research at a medical school in Texas over the summer, I was lucky enough to meet one the dean of admissions for the medical school. She told me “now we expect much more from you, because you are going to Emory.” So people who matter, ie adcoms of grad schools, business employers have all heard great things about the school.

Yea, I told some people that I got in Emory, and they were like Emoryy??

I am still not sure if I am going to Emory this fall, I still need to do some more research

Screw those people. Go to Emory because you like it. People who matter later in your professional life WILL KNOW Emory.

If they give you the face of “Ohh, sorry you couldn’t get into a good school” just be like “yeah, I know, your son at Jackass University is just too lucky to be at his 3rd tier school. Mine’s barely in the 4th tier!” and then just leave. They have no credentials to judge how good your school is if they don’t even keep up enough to know that Emory’s been in top 20 for years.

My best friend pulled out the Embry-Riddle thing on me when I mentioned Emory. If you haven’t got that, too, then I swear you’re just ■■■■■■■■ that you applied to Emory.
