Is Engineering For Me?

It seems as if all of the research I do about engineering leaves me feeling a little overwhelmed. I’ve been strong in science and math courses, I’m currently a junior taking AP Biology and AP Chemistry with high A’s in the courses, with Honors Pre-Calc. I am taking AP Calc AB next year as well as AP Physics Mechanics/APES. However, even though I succeed in these types of classes, I found I strongly dislike Chemistry, and am hoping AP Physics is a class I’ll enjoy (loved Honors Physics). I have the rankings etc. to make it into a college for engineering, but I’m just not sure.

My question is, what is it that draws one to a particular type of engineering/made you confident engineering was the right major for you? I’m thinking Mechanical Engineering/Computer Engineering because they seem to entail what most interests me, but I still don’t feel confident in my choice.

Hang in there. You will probably be fine. See how you like your courses next year/

To decide if engineering is right for you, you need to look at what you do for fun. Is it at all related to engineering? It doesn’t have to be hard engineering and it doesn’t need to be an exclusive activity. You can and should have varied interests. But if all you do has absolutely nothing to do with engineering, then you might want to think about whether you can make a career out of what you do do for fun. You’ve got to like what you do for a living because, after all, you’ll be doing for many, many years and if you don’t like it, it will be real tough to do well in it.

Hey there, I’m going into aerospace engineering (which is basically a subset of mechanical), and I’m not nuts about chemistry either, though I enjoy physics. Fortunately I only have to take 1 semester of chem, so I think I can survive.

I love airplanes and spacecraft, so I knew that I wanted to be an aerospace engineer from the first time I heard the word. My mom is an electrical engineer, as is one of my older sisters (just graduated 2 days ago). My mom became an electrical engineer I think because she was good at math in high school and a teacher said that electrical engineers use a lot of math, so she would be good at it.
