So I have always wanted to be an engineer all my life and I took an engineering class my freshman year of high-school. I wasn’t totally in love with it but I wanted to continue to the next class because it was still somewhat interesting and my friends also took it. Lately, I have been watching a few videos about an engineers’ daily life and it doesn’t intrigue me. I really love math but is engineering right for me?
You have plenty of time to decide. You can start in Engineering in college and if you find that it is not to your liking, you can transfer to a science major or something else entirely. High school engineering courses are not really indicative of what being an engineer means. Furthermore, there are lots of different engineering disciplines and many paths you can go with an engineering degree. The education you get with an engineering degree (or another STEM field for that matter) opens a lot of doors to potential careers.
" I really love math" - That’s a key point. Try to arrange to take Calc in your senior year. If you like it, then you should consider Engineering major in college. Like xray says, you have plenty of time to decide.
Thank you for replying
Thank you your answer was very helpful
Yeah, I would recommend that anyone planning to major in engineering take calculus and calculus-based physics if they can. That’s about the closest you’re going to get to simulating a college-style course in high school, especially if your teacher covers the material at double speed (i.e. a physics class with mechanics and E&M each done in one semester).
High school engineering classes don’t really reflect what either engineering work or school is going to be like. It’s good that you like them, but they’re not what you’re going to be seeing moving forward.
thank you sir/mam
You can start college as an engineering major and easily transition to a chem or physics major if it doesn’t suit you. The opposite maneuver would be more difficult.
thank you
