Hi everybody. I live in Europe, specifically in Greece and I use this site cause I can't find sth like this in my country. Anyway, this year I left school and I am interested in studying environmental engineering. However, I 'd also like to go in the field of renewable energy. In my country we have two departments of environmental engineering, which both have 1 or 2 lessons on renewable energy.

Finally, what I want to ask is if environmental engineering concerns renewable energy or if it allows you be occupied with renewable energy with after university studies (master or stuff liike that) or teese two fields have no things in common??

I’m in environmental engineering and I’ve had a few interviews for renewable energy jobs although I didn’t get them.

I’d recommend chemical or mechanical engineering over environmental if you want to get into renewable energy. Its easier for these people to get renewable energy jobs. However, environmental engineering can still get you into grad school for chemical or mechanical engineering so you can get into the renewable energy field by that route.

Dear lowendnewbie, thanks for the interest, but, you said that you have had some interviews for renewable energy jobs. So you mean that you have got the knowledge on renewable energy and you were just not prefered over other mechanics??

In other words, the question I ask is ‘‘Does environmental engineering offer the knowledge and the ability to an engineer to be occupied with renewable energy??’’

the jobs that i was interviewed for were jobs looking for 2nd or 3rd year students. Whether i was in chem, mech, or environmental didn’t matter too much at that point. For example, students from any of the above program probably don’t know too much about ethanol production (after 2nd or 3rd year) so theres no real advantage in each stream.

We haven’t had a course specifically on renewable energy although I’ve study thermo and fluids which are core subjects for mech and chem eng. From my electives I can take a class on renewable energy but this depends on the school.

In my opinion, the most important subjects for renewable energy are the energy classes such as thermo or heat transfer. Environmental students can take these classes at the lower levels (depending on the school) but i’d still recommend chem eng or mech eng where higher levels of these classes are required, again depending on the school.
