Is ESL education a good field to enter? ESOL Ed. M. a good idea? ESL teacher job prospects in NYC?

Hello All,

I am a junior English major considering a career as a teacher. I realize that the market for teachers is not very good at present due to the poor economy, and that many prospective teachers are unable to find steady work.
However, I am most interested in a career as an ESL teacher (I would obtain an ESOL Ed. M). Although I have heard that ESL education is a more in-demand field than many other teaching subjects, and that there is lots of potential for growth, I have also heard that the majority of teachers now are obtaining TESOL certification and that many administrators, when hiring, don’t know the difference between an ESOL Ed. M. and TESOL certification, so that qualified ESL professionals have a hard time finding good full-time positions.
Is this true? Or are there plenty of good positions for ESL teachers? Is the demand for ESL teachers greater than that for teachers in other subjects? Are they as respected as teachers in other subjects, with the same level of job establishment / reliability? And is the salary for an ESL teacher comparable to the salaries of other teachers, such as English, History, or Chemistry teachers? Overall, what are the job prospects for ESL teachers? Although I am open to traveling abroad as an ESL instructor for a few years, I would eventually like to settle in the United States (preferably in New York, my home state).
Lastly, does anyone know how the job market for ESL teachers is in New York City? I live on Long Island, so am thinking about working in NYC. Any advice, information, or experience of yours is greatly appreciated. I want to learn as much as I can before going ahead with my ESL education career plans.
Thank you so much! I appreciate your help and input!

Ok so I’ll tell you about what is going here in CA. I have my MA in Linguistics with a TESOL certificate at the graduate level… I have 2 years of experience teaching…my friends and colleagues have equal if not more experience and finding a job here in Los Angeles that is steady is very difficult…

I think ESOL Ed is not heard of compared to TESOL, so I would suggest getting a TESOL certificate if you are hell bent on being an ESL teacher. Some people really love being an ESL teacher…

ESL teachers are respected at the college university level, not high school or community college level.

Salary? depends if you land a job teaching at a high school it is about the same…but the competition will be with people who have taught esl for years and have a teaching credential (at least in my state)…maybe 40,000 a year?

I have a friend here who makes around $45,000 a year at a major university, she teaches 4 quarters. Each year their contract is renewed, and during the summer they are out of work. Not sure if this is the lifestyle of an ESL teacher that you imagine or not.

As for me I don’t use the degree since I feel like that is not enough money to live off of, and there is a lot of stress about not knowing where your next paycheck may or may not come from. Tenure track jobs for people with an MA are non-existent in my state…perhaps in other places this is not the case…

I wish i could tell you about NY but I’d imagine it would not be very different from CA. Another option might be to pursue a PhD, but you do end up wasting a lot of time that way…

how about opening up a small business and tutoring people in English on the side?
