My S is applying RD to Yale. He asked two teachers for recommendations. One teacher has already mailed the rec. The other one may not have mailed it yet. However, the Common
App shows another teacher(a third teacher, who was not supposed to send to Yale)'s rec shows in the school form. My S asked his GC and was told that the third teacher did it online and was automatically sent rec to all schools he applies. Now there are 3 rec. being sent to Yale when it only needs 2. Is it going to hurt my son's application by this extra rec? I told my S to ask the original teacher, the one who might have not sent yet to not send it. But my son said it may be too rude to do that, and this particular teacher knows him well. Can anyone please advise?

Current applicants, correct me if I’m wrong, because I don’t have access to the CA this year–don’t you have to designate which teacher LORs you want sent to a school rather than all of the ones that were uploaded being sent?

And as long as it’s not a negative rec. It doesn’t sound like it would be though.

@entomom, Yes, but I’m not sure if you can remove a teacher rec from a certain school after it has been uploaded to that school. Maybe we can, but I’m not sure, and I’m not going to fiddle with it to get a definitive answer because I don’t want to screw my recs up! Haha.

What I’m saying is that when teachers upload their LORs, it goes to the CA, but not to any particular school UNTIL the applicant selects that teacher to send to a specific school.

In the OPs case, the 3rd teacher uploaded to the CA, but the student can select which 2 they want sent to Y.

Again, I thought that this is the way it worked, but am unsure.

My son’s school uses Naviance, though, so I’m not sure if he can choose which school each teacher should send a recommendation to. We don’t think he can change anything through the common app. Does anyone know if counselors can make changes on Naviance?

My son talked to his GC today, and was told that it is Common App’s problem, so we asked Common App and then was told that it is Naviance’s problem. And this Naviance won’t allow us to contact them except through the school GC office, and this Gc office seems useless. The GC can’t access to the teacher’s rec. Please can anyone help/advise how to fix this problem of deleting the extra teacher’s rec from Common App? Thank you sooo much!

Are you worried that the third letter will not be a positive letter?
If not, you can go into common app and keep track of all teacher recommendations and whether or not they have been downloaded by the college. Most schools accept between 2-4 letters, they just don’e want to receive 10!!
With RD, you have time to follow the status of these letters. Not surehow, without your S’s permission a letter was able to send through naviance.
Other option, some colleges on their application status, allow you to write an email with any clarification you want. You could send a note through that stating which two letters are your primary academic letters. Best wishes

We think the extra rec is just similar to the other two. Our concern is that some schools my S applying to strongly discourage to send more than 2 rec. This particular teacher just sent his rec to all schools in Naviance that my S applies to, which he was only asked to send 5, but he sent them to every schools instead. so now some of the schools are receiving 3 teacher’s rec. we are just worried this extra one would hurt my son’s application.

I really would try not to worry…it’s not like you’re sending 15 letters, just one more.
Again , if you are very concerned, your son should just send a quick update to application email stating ( to the schools that only want 2) that an additional letter was sent by reeor and “these are the two” main letter he hopes they consider

First of all, I’m sure that this happens often, so I wouldn’t get too stressed about what the school will think. Second, the GC picks which teachers thru naviance (I think), so it’s likely the GCs mistake. Third, the teachers or GCs upload the LOR (you can see it on Common App website), but check on CA if the school has downloaded it; if the school has not downloaded it yet, then possibly (not sure) you can have the LOR removed, but I have no idea how you would do it. If it is already downloaded by the school, then you’ll have to decide if you want to send the 3rd LOR or not, but again, i’m sure that this happens often so I don’t think that the schools would hold it against you if you sent 3. And if you send 3, you can send an email or letter to admissions office about why, and it will probably make it in your app file. Something like “Sorry. I sent 3 LORs. Computer glitch.” I add the caveat that is is all my interpretation from what I’ve seen thru the common app website and naviance.

Those schools are for RD. My Son has not submitted through the common app yet. don’t think the schools be able to have them yet. However, the original two teachers have already mailed their recs. That is why we try to delete/remove the 3rd rec before S complete his common app RD. We just emailed the GC again and try to convince her to see if she can get any help from Naviance support. Sometime I just feel that those GC are not as helpful but screwed up.

^ I think you might be worrying a little too much. Everything really is ok if the schools receive 3, even if they are “identical” in information about your son. In no way will this hurt his application. Breathe :-)

A third letter will not hurt his application. Period. This is an unnecessary concern. I can see the adcoms being annoyed by getting 10 LORs from your employer, your coach, your minister, the person you dog-sit for who was an alum, etc. but a reasonable number of extra LORs will not be an issue. Hopefully each adds unique information since they are not going to focus on an additional LOR that just repeats the same.

The same thing happened to my D because the teacher didn’t read the FERPA and sent to every school, not the two school’s he was supposed to. The problem is that some schools may block the third letter going through Naviance. You have to pay attention and see if the third letter (the intended letter) goes through. If not, you have to provide an envelope and the rec form to the teacher who got blocked because the other teacher screwed up. Then, you have to send an email to Yale that says something about priority of the letters, but don’t blame anyone. This happens alot with Naviance because teachers don’t read instructions. When Yale gets the email, they will know what happened and that your kid did not intend three letters to go. My D’s problem is that the extra letter was not an “academic” teacher and she needs a second academic letter to go. Still, I think it will be fine because the teacher who sent it is her journalism advisor and will speak about her leadership role on the magazine. Like others said, if it is a good letter, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Thanks for your replies everyone! I do think the extra rec is a good one. We are just concerned that the schools would think we don’t follow direction which might hinder S application. We tried, I even called Naviance, the rep said there is no way they can fix it. so we just let it go and hope for the best. This extra rec is the only one that shows on the common app, becuase the other two teachers mailed the LOR alraedy. So we just hope the admission office won’t uplode the one from common up when they see the two mailed ones.

I wouldn’t worry about this at all. It probably happens a lot, especially if some teachers are submitting through Naviance and others are mailing recs.

chrissyblu…if the third letter is listed as “downloaded” by college does that remaove any worries, or would you still recommend a note to the school. We had a similar issue, one academic letter and one personal letter went out first, with the second academic letter going out third and last. I have been feeling OK because all three letters show as downloaded by colleges
