Is financial aid negotiable?

I received my financial aid package this week for UNC Chapel Hill, and my dad was not too happy with the family contribution that we have to pay along with the loans. Is there any way this aid can be negotiable to see if they lower the tuition? It may be because I"m out of state. If not, I don't think I'll be able to attend:(

Thanks!

I’m not quite sure how this all works, but I’ve heard that it’s a good idea to call them up a little closer to decision day. By then, people will have declined their acceptances and there might be more money up for grabs.

But I didn’t get any aid and I’m IS so I can’t comment on anything for real.

You can’t “negotiate” in the sense that “this is too expensive, I don’t want to pay 20k a year for OOS tuition, you can’t make me.” You can, however, negotiate if you are in the position of “I don’t think our EFC accurately shows our ability to pay OOS tuition because of X, Y, and Z which were not accounted for in FAFSA.” I was in the second camp during admissions and they reconsidered my FA package because our EFC wasn’t at all accurate due to some sudden family changes. They gave me a much better one the second time around.
