Is foreign language required at Columbia? Even with AP credits?

So I just got a likely letter this week to Columbia, and I am excited to join the class of 2021! I know that taking a language is part of the Core, but if I get a 4 or a 5 on my upcoming AP French exam, does that satisfy the foreign language requirement entirely so I don’t have to take any foreign language courses at Columbia? Or does that just place me at a higher level of French? I’ve already seen the chart on Columbia’s website of AP credits they accept, but I am still a bit confused. Personally, I would prefer to not take another year of French.

Speaking of AP credits, for a 5 in some AP courses, Columbia allows “no exemption” from any course, but grants 3 “advanced credits”. What does this mean?

Also, if anyone else has some general advice on course selection for freshmen, that would be much appreciated!

I’m guessing you would still need to take some language and would just be placed in a higher level! Just out of curiosity, could you say some of your stats?

I posted it in the Regular Decision 2021 thread. Hope that helps you! @angelkitty247

Bump

Congrats.

Yes, you will have fulfilled the FL requirement, but you will not receive the 3 credits unless you take a 3000-level course. But you’ve still fulfilled the FL requirement even if you opt not to take another course.

You get the credit, but you get no exemptions from any core requirements or from any required courses for the major in the department in question.

@skieurope That is so helpful. Thank you!
