Do you have to take foreign language classes in college? if so, how many years?

i think it is different for every school. at ucla, you are required to take up to level 3 (intermediate) for foreign language, which is equivalent to about 6 quarters. however, there are many ways to satisfy this requirement, like passing the AP test (with a 4 or 5 i believe) or doing really well on the diagnostic exam.

Many colleges will require you to pass a certain level of placement test to test out of language requirements. At UW, you can get retroactive credits for what you did in high school after you complete a higher level lang. class with a grade of B or higher. Some don't require anything at all. It really varies from school to school.

different for every school. MIT and Caltech have no language requirement

wat about cornell, penn, Nrthwstrn, washU...schools of that sort? all arts and sciences by the way and i want to major somewhere along the lines of biology/biochem.

You are going to have to look at each of the schools that you are interested in to find out what their foreign language requirements are. There is no rule of thumb. Every school is different.
